Critical question
Critical question
I'm counting down to the 25th when I leave for Botswana accompanied by two friends; Dr Joe and Col Chuck. I suddenly realized that while I've been distracted by small details such as; What do I hunt, which guns do I take, etc, I've neglected a critical question.
Where do we eat dinner when we over night at the Afton guest house?
Last time I recall a seafood place, is it still open?
Any other ideas?
Thanks

I would recommend the Seafood Basket [I think that is the name, could be Ocean Basket] I have eaten there 5 or 6 times and it has always been excellent.
There is also an Italian resturant, Louis will know which one, that is owned and run by a real Italian. I have eaten there twice, the food is very good.

PostDriverWhen I was there last October, Louis' son-in-law was doing a braai right there at the guest house for the guests. Steaks and all the trimmings right there on the grounds...pretty darned good! Everyone staying there that night took advantage of it. After a full day in the air, it was nice to relax and not have to go back out to a restaurant. You might send Annalise an email inquiring about it.

sierrabravo45The Ocean Basket is Damn Good. Last time I was there we ordered too much food, and proceeded to eat it all. But it was SO GOOD.
The Italian place is nice also, took my wife their last year before the trip got started. We Proceeded to drink 3 bottles of wine, had an appetizer, main meal and everything. If I remember right, it was pretty inexpensive. Get the crab and portabello mushroom, its GOOD!
Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent.

TexasHunterBeen to both the Italian Restaurant and the Ocean Basket - We preferred the Ocean Basket. I want to say it was $30 US with a 25% Tip for us and we had a ton of food last year.
The wait staff was awesome and attentative at both places.
We were taken to the Chuck Wagon by the gent at Afton House - fine food and of course fine wine, The dish that really stood out in my mind was their appetizer of beef marrow bones, good enough that I considered ordering another serving for dessert.

Jim and I used to go to the Italian restaurant when we stayed over at the Afton House. But when Louis's S-I-L (Arrie?) told us about the braai this past September we opted for that. We usually stay two days in Jo'burg before flying out to the hunt area so we ate at the Afton House twice. It was very, very nice.
I'm a vegetarian (I know, I know, that's tantamount to being the anti-Christ of the hunting world - but my Jim more than makes up for it with his backstrap lust). Anyway, Arrie went out of his way to see that there were plenty of options available for me.
The casinos are the only reason I would even leave the Afton House at night.
Ocean basket! That was the name. I gather it's still open, and it was good, but the braai sounds too good to miss. I think I'll opt for that if it's available. Thanks for the input.

h kittleI stayed at the Afton Guest House coming and going last July. Louis took us to the steak house the first night. On the return leg we went to the Ocean Basket. We had time to kill the next day so we went back down to the Ocean Basket for lumch, but we ended up in the Italian restuarant next door. I perfered the Ocean Basket and/or the Italian place next door over the steak house. The Ocean Basket is the only sea food restuarant I have ever been too that had a belly dancer perform. She was quite nice looking. Better than most belly dancers I have seen.
Take plenty of $1.00 bills, They will wear you out in the Joberg Airport for tips.
Have fun

Yep, that's them! A great steak, and dancing too! But watch out for those South African Okes they do get a little "loose" on the dance floor.
