First let me say that I am an avid hound man and come from a long family tree of hound men. I actually consider hunting leopard, or bear, or moutain lion, or raccoon, or...more sporting than baiting...but that is my opinion just like Andrew has his...opposing opinions.
Just like Saeed said though...writing a vehemently scathing article about a "long-accepted style" of hunting and then publishing it where it can be referenced over & over time & time again by those who wish to abolish "ALL" hunting is definitely NOT helpful.
But...with that said...I will defend his "right " to say it with my life.
Will just have to give him a sound verbal debate hiding over a camfire one day!
Lane,
I have not seen the article in question but I do remember sparring by email with the publisher and editor (last year?) regarding my staunch opinions. I have not received recent notification that this was to be published nor have been sent a proof to read?
It is my opinion that to hunt cities protected species with dogs provides much needed ammunition for the antis. Sport is not really the debate here and as you have already stated we have been there and done that.
I only have one day in town and will only be able to address this on my return in a couple of weeks.

ledvmHi Andrew,
Good to hear from you. Hope all is well and hunting is good.
We can save our debate 'til we're chewing our cuds over a nice campfire with a cold beer in hand.
Even though we don't always see eye to eye...Your an attribute to you profession!

mauser93Mr. Baldry's writing made him appear a narrow-minded twit. By reputation, he most emphatically is neither.
Unfortunate.

SaeedCould some creative editing has changed the meaning of the article somehow?
I am saying this because I have steadfastly refused to give ANY interviews to media - magazines, newspapers and TV - as long as they do not accept my conditions.
Which are very simple. No publication of what I say is allowed without me approving it first. Word for word.
So far everyone seems to have refused to accept this.
Just looking at my records, 3 TV stations have approached me in the past month alone. They sent me THEIR legal agreements, which basicaly strips you of any say in the matter at all.

Quite possible, although I don't know if 'creative' is the correct word. As a writer, I know how easily this case scenario can occur and there's little one can do about it, at least here. At one time I was doing some writing for a local hunting rag and in order to fit one of my stories in the space available, they simply chopped off the first few paragraphs! Completely changed the meaning of the story. In fact it no longer had any meaning, it was completely ruined. It was not the only time they blundered, but the other times were merely irritating, the paragraph chopping incident made me wild. Just made me look like a fool and they couldn't understand why I was so peeved. Needless to say, I moved on. One must remember that many of these editors are editors because they can't write.

mauser93, I disagree.
Andrew makes a forceful, although brief, argument against hunting leopard (and a couple of other species) with dogs - or with artificial light.
What was published was not a full article; rather, it took the form of a letter to the editor, Brooke Chilvers Lubin.

Saeed, your policy vis-à-vis the press is a wise one, and is the same as mine, for two reasons.
First, it gives you control over what is published, and lessens the risk that your words will be manipulated by editing or taken out of context.
Second, because of that, it insures that your words will never be published!

rhrommSaeed, I agree about making interviews as they can be used against you.
Is using technology such as trail cameras and even bait any harder than hounds?
I have grown up in a state that is primarly hunted by dogs as the swamps are thick and gnarly. I was shocked to read about Africa having probelms with hounds, as it was a far different probelm than the states face. Here the probelm lies in hounds crossing property lines.

Having authored numerous scintific publications...this IS EXACTLY how it should be and how it is when someone is publishing a research article. Scientific journals have referees to review and critique ones work and writing...but the author/researcher has final say so of the content prior to publishing.
I have written a few pieces for various lay journals...and they are subject to skew your words.
Saeeds advice is well founded: "have fianl approval of what you write"...or you may find your (now their) words haunting you!

Dog ManAndrew's letter to the editor of African Hunting Gazette was in the same tone and content as his earlier post on AR "dogs and cats". It's apparent that he is determined to get the use of dogs and artificial light in Africa banned.
He may have not known it was going to be published but his campaign continues.
