BugoffRoosevelt Safari
Spent the week vacationing in DC with the family. Found it interesting at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History I couldn't find anyone to tell me if any of the remaining mounts were taken by Roosevelt. Some of the help were not aware of his contribution to the museum. Couldn't even get a copy of African Game Trails in the gift shop.

SaeedMay be they are following the current trend in abomination!
Making everything politically correct!
Or, they are following another trend of our times, employing ignorant idiots to run the show!

billrquimbySome of his trophies wound up in the Bronx Zoo's National Collection of Heads and Horns Collection, which eventually was split with heads going to Safari Club International and the Boone & Crockett Club. His black rhino featured in African Game Trails wound up at SCI's International Wildlife Museum in Tucson. The last time I saw it, only a small sign high up on the wall next to it told viewers what it was.

Thank you Bill, just goes to confirm what I have said.

Oryxhunter1983Actually, quite a few of his trophies are in the Smithsonian in the back vaults...they aren't on display. My old boss at Texas A&M actually has held them and even verified them from his writings in African Game Trails. Specifically one buffalo that was shot by Kermit through the horn.
That being said, there are drawers full of his trophies locked away never to be seen by the public! Pretty sad really.

boarkillerRoosevelt museum of hunting and conservation, that sounds like an idea.
Probably would take act of congress, which has at the moment their heads up their asses quite deep.
Any ideas anyone?

May I assume that's another dig at SCI?

SaeedNot at all Bill.
SCI has nothing to do with this.
What I meant was whoever was in charge did not wish to have Roosvelt's trophies prominently displayed, as they might not be very PC right now.

billrquimbyYou undoubtedly are correct about the Bronx Zoo's decision to dump the Heads and Horns collection. On the other hand, the material that SCI got was is poor shape, with minimal descriptions about what it was, who had collected it, and where it was from. Roosevelt's black rhino head was saved from obscurity because its origin was noted on the back of the form.
I've always wondered why the Bronx Zoo had that head. I had always thought that Roosevelt's African trophies went to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
