Hey guys a was at a gun show last winter and found a 308win/7.62x54 ak rifle. Looked just like a AK 47 just a bit longer reciever. Molded plastic stock and fore arm grip. $400. Anybody know anything about this weopon? The guy said it is built in Russia and assembled here.
Thinking it would be fun to own as a plinker.

I've seen them before. I would opt for the old 7.62X39 myself. I miss very good with them.

Zastava made a version of the AK47 scaled up to chamber the 7.62x51/308Win round, also the 7.92x57 Mauser round, these were said to be at their limit for rounds this powerful. There was also the SVD sniper rifle & its clones which were chambered for the 7.62x54 Rimmed round, this was like the M14 of the soviet bloc countries & has a very similar receiver to the AK, they may also have been chambered for the Nato (7.62x51) round but my reference doesn't mention this. For plinking the AK in its original calibre is a hell of a way to go, cheap as chips steel case ammo for just about rimfire prices (well maybe a little more )

Peru purchased once AK47 chambered in 7,62x51 mm manufactured in E. Germany. I think that they already had the FAL and did not want to introduce another caliber.

They are Saiga's. These are the best buy on the market right now. They come in 223, 7.62x39, 308, 30-06, 410 shotgun, 20 gauge, and 12 gauge, These guns will increase big time in value because most believe there days of importation are numbered. They are made at the Izmash factory in Russia. You can get the 223 and 7.62x39 for about $250-$300. Basically they are a sporterized Ak.

Yep thats it. Saw one at the gun show this week end, and yep they have already gone up $100. 499 now.
Thanks guys maybe after tax time I will pick one up. Right now I'm working on a Ruger 480 purchace.

Filmit is correct---it is a Saiga. I have the 16" 308 one with synthetic stocks. You can also get it with a 24" bbl and wood stocks. Mine shoots great, about 1.5MOA at 100 yrds with standard Remington 180gr Corlokts. I have Kavar's side-saddle scope mounts. One fitted with a red dot sight and another with a night vision scope and use them for pigs both day & night. All I do is slide one scope off and the other on for whatever time of day I'm hunting.

In fact there are other variations than just the Saiga, too. What you can get depends on what is imported to your country.

The "Medved" model comes in, amongst others, both 9x53R (essentially a necked up 7.62x54-R) and 9.3x53R. The Medved was quite popular with Russians who were professional hunters in Siberia under the USSR government.
