Years ago I used a 12ga Mossberg 500 with a full choke as a "yard tool"

I was clearing an impenetrable thicket of holly bushes

Laying on the ground and shooting the trunk of the bushwould amputate the bush nearly flush with the ground and the tree would simply fall over.

that was with bird shot which isn't known for penetration.

The most reliable method for taking down branches with a shotgun is attempting to hit ruffed grouse on the wing.

That's how we got our Christmas tree many years ago. Dad would take us on a quail hunt and when we found a nice pine or red cedar we liked he'd shoot it off at the base. I used to think that's how it was supposed to be done.

Over the years I have killed small trees trying that all so.

I remember reading somewhere that Hiram Maxim when doing promotional tours for his new machinegun all over Europe over a century ago, apparently performed the same trick.

It took four of us several hundred rounds to drop a dead pine tree last November - damn' thing was so tough Forstner 12ga slugs were bouncing off the hard centre when shot from 130yds.
