Stevens Savage 77 E marked "US"

I just laid my hands on it, 18 in bbl, marked "US" on the receiver below the ejection port, not "US Property", just "US".
Looks like something made in the 40s.

Any input? Thanks.

A lot of Savage/Steven 77's were sold to the US Government for Vietnam. Not just a few were sold for use over there.
