EterrySavage 99 age???
I recently traded for a Savage 99 in 300 Savage. The serial number is 687XXX. It looks like it had a tang peep on it before its previous owner removed it and had it drilled/tapped for a scope. Also had the stock cut back to put on an OLD recoil pad waaaay back when. It has the trim fore end with checkering on grip panels and fore end.
Any idea of age of this rifle? I had an ugly duckling 99 in 308 as a teen and sold it in a moment of insanity. I am now attempting to atone for my earlier indiscretions.
Thanks
Eterry

China Fleet SailorThe
Savage 1895, Savage 1899, & Savage 99 site has a lot of great info, but they can only give you dates of manufacture based on serial no. up to 566,000. So anything above that will be 1951 or later.
If you look on the lever boss of the rifle you will see an oval with a letter cast into it. That can also give you the year your rifle was made, as long as it was made before 1970.

The Savage 99 is a great rifle. And it's owned by the coolest people. Like you, me, and
Steve McQueen .
Back when I was in gunsmithing school I worked on an old 99 that I couldn't find any drawings for .I remember that it had a chambered round indicator.Been around for a long time ! One of the Clint Eastwood westerns had a fancy grade 99 carried by Robert Duvall.
