Max503Almost got a turkey
I always buy a turkey tag in addition to buying a deer tag. Never really got close to getting one till yesterday. I knew a large flock of turkeys was feeding just over the rise from me. They were making a heck of a racket. I waited, but when it didn't seem like they were going to feed towards me I started stalking over the rise. I came up behind some big oaks. The turkeys were about 40-50 yards away. I had a pretty decent shot at one so I took it. I was pretty sure I missed. When I went to get my arrow I found 2 large and about 4 small feathers sheared off the bird. You could see where they had been cut.
It's things like that that keep me going out on those cold dark mornings.

DocYou should have been with me this morning in KY. I don't get the whole, "turkeys can see the white of your eyes at 100 yards."
I was on the ground, decked out in orange hat and vest up against a big oak. I heard the turkeys coming from behind me and coming right to me. I peeked around the tree and about 11 or so were walking right at me. I saw them at 60 yards. They stopped at about 9 yards and began to scratch and feed, all the while I'm still motionless but looking at them. No face mask or nothing. I'm not a turkey expert but shouldn't they have seen me??
OH, they were all longbeards. And all were incredibly stupid. After I waved them off, they flew about 40 yards away, regrouped, and fed for an hour.
Are they always this dumb or only in the fall?

AquavitTurkeys do seem to get really dumb in the fall. I've walked into flocks on a couple occasions in the fall and they didn't seem to care all that much. The turkeys would stay about ten yards in front of me. I almost caught one by hand.
In the spring, the same birds will spook at the slightest movement.

GeneThey're only dumb when you don't have a tag.
