Anyone here use a UDS to smoke their dinner? Have a pellet smoker that works great but got the bug to build a drum smoker.

I built a really nice one several years ago using an old Norge refrigerator. Worked great.

buckey, try to find out how to kill that bug. My first smoker was an electric drum type, maybe a Weber. Worst contraption I ever had. No versatility.

Stay with the pellet smoker. Find a new hobby. Get out of the house more. Don't turn to drugs, but a stiff drink once in a while might kill that bug.

I am just finishing off my Nite-Cap when I clicked on Accurate Reloading and I spotted your reply. To late too save me, I'm a goner and when not reading gun forums I'm deep into Pork Porn! Love to cook and am looking to be able to do 3 or 4 pork butts at a time where now 2 is just doable and just plan have to darn many mouths to feed. One of my kids a 2nd grade teacher who is in charge of food for the other teachers at conference time call on dear dad to fill the bill. I need a bigger smoker and a UDS looks to get the job done.

After I just posted the above I got to thinking that when I was younger I'd look a good looking gal and wonder what if? Now I look in the meat case and wonder if Chicken Wings will go on sale? Yup, I'm well past gone!

Yep, I've got an old friend that says, "At my age, I'd rather be promised than offered."

Well it's just past 6:00 A.M. and am heading off to the store to check the meat case for marked down Country Style pork ribs that need to be sold by tonight. Might even come up with some Baby Backs?

Mine is a 42 inch pipe on wheels that weighs 900 plus pounds but balances with a lower attached 30 inch wood burner..We built it..It balances so that one man can move it around if he is healthy..

I'm amazed at the grills and smokers that people make with one goal in mind, Damn Good Food! Bought a real nice brisket last night at the store (Choice $3.99 a LBS) could not believe how nice they were and expected to pay at least $5.99 per LBS. Had to make a run to Grand Rapids this mourning so I could get some red Butcher's paper to do the brisket on the smoker.

There was a time that I would smoke 1,600 lbs of pork loin in a day for Drive Through Dinners at the high school. Used 55 gal drums converted to up-right smokers. I would have 12 going at a time plus a friend would bring his trailer smokers. I also had a stainless "Barrel" that would hold the equivalent of 3 1/2 barrels of meat.

Best food comes off a barrel.

In case anyone is interested, I have one for sale that is made out of a 500 gal. propane tank W/ additional high rise smoker + an external firebox. This is on a trailer w/ hitch + a new black paint job. We're asking $1500.00 + I have it sitting at a friend's business (American R.V.) on Highway 29 in Liberty Hill. Just the ticket for those cookoffs.

Our fishing camp smoker is a 55 gallon drum with top and bottom cut out, a door at the bottom on the side to restoke wood...top is a grill with hanging hooks for meat, and a top with a handle on it..fill it with mesuite and let it cook down to white ash meat on the hooks and put the top on it,let'er cook...its fast and handy, when done just kick it over and drag it off, put out the fire.

Spent the mourning getting ready to turn dirt and start feeding people and the rest of the day was spent building the Drum Smoker. Still need steel mesh for the charcoal basket but our Gov has shut down just about everything.

I called my sales rep at the steel co. in Houston on Thursday + they still have product + are still shipping. Good to know when you already have jobs on the books.

You might just have to wait. I deal with my supplier on a regular basis + always pay my bill before its due so I get good service but some things are just not available. What are you talking about when you say mesh? There are a lot of varieties of C.R. screen + expanded. P.M. me with more details, I might have something here in the shop. Oh yes, I'm sure the liquor sales are quite brisk.

If I were to pull a few strings I could get the JD dealer to get it but we're talking only a few more weeks and I'll be able to pick out what I want to build my charcoal basket out of.Until then I'll just have to use pellets. Do I smell a pork butt smoking? I believe I do!
