Been out of SS reloading for a few years, as evidenced by the left over powders that I have, 473AA, 571 etc. I am looking for a clean burning magnum type powder for 1 1/2 to 1 7/8 lead loads for 3 inch 12 ga. shells. I have downloaded the new Alliant, Hodgdon, and Winchester charts, but have no idea what the newer powders do as far as dirty or clean burn. Any help would be appreciated.

I darn near went into depression when winchester discontinued it's super lite,,did damn good in my 12 ga. 1 oz. loads,,and was the ultimate in my .45acp. Clays burns pretty clean in my .45 colt rounds,,And is getting a following due to that nature,,Have yet to try it in my shotguns though,,Still have 5 lbs. of red dot to digest,,,,Maby take a look and see if it applies to your desires,,,Clay

Nothing in Clays for anything over 1 3/8 so far. Blue Dot still seems to be the way to go, but it is kind of nasty in the tube. Figured with all the new powders, there was one which would burn a little cleaner. Lots of loads for HS-7, but it is filty too. Anybody used any Longshot yet?

For a clean burning powder I load Accurate's Solo 1000 in my shot shells. I have been loading it for many years and switched from Red dot to solo for the clean burn. It is really clean too. A guy walked off the firing line with me and I showed him my barrel, to show him how clean this powder is and he said I don't know how you did it John, but you cleaned your barrel somehow. He did not believe me. That was testimonial enough for me.

Claybuster, thanks for asking.
She had her 6 month check up two weeks ago, all systems are go!! No sign of rejection to date, they have cut her anti-rejection drugs down to a minimum. Still a few lingering problems, her jugular is only transmitting about 25% of the blood flow it should, this as a result of all the tubes over the years for dialysis, but angioplasty every 6 months or so should handle that for the time being. All in all, a very remarkable thing.

johnch,
Thanks for the reply on the Longshot.

You mentioned having some WW 571. It, along with WW 540, were two of my heavy load favorites. It is my understanding that HS-7 and HS-6 are identical spec powders to 571 and 540 respectively, and as far as I know, the Hodgdon numbers are still available. I never found either of the WW balls to be particularly "dirty", but then I'm not too particular about how the bore looks as compared to how the load shoots.

I haven't shot a lot of it but the Longshot is some pretty good stuff. I have loaded some 3 1/2in turkey loads and some buckshot also. It makes some super boomer 2 3/4in stuff to.

here's an example of what Alliant has on it's website:

I use Bluedot for mag shotshells in 12 Ga but I use an O/U and don't really care how clean it burns.

I've also used longshot and must say that it's some good stuff...give it a try.

Picked up some Longshot this week, as it seems to be the consensus of the board. Stopped at Bass Pro first, man, they think a lot of their powder. Hit Sportsman’s Warehouse next, about 40% less on powder and 50% less on shot. I am done with Bass Pro on reloading supplies!!

Most of the slower powdwes are dirty as mentioned bluedot is a god powder, but i think a little slow for 1-3/8 oz 12 ga, a better powder may be B&P.M92sthis is a clean modernish powder that gives high speeds and reasonable paterns, i like the old nobel 82 powder if you can find it, another powder could be Vectan A1-36 powder this is on the fast side of what you want though for 1-3/8 th oz loads so you may lose a few fps in the interests of preasure.
