Radar Detectors
What do you guys use?

I am finding that my wit and charm are apparently waning.

The red Alfa Romeo does not help.

Thanks.

With all the cars on the road equipped with blind spot warning systems, radar detectors tend to go off every time another car is near you, creating constant false warnings.

I've given up on them for the most part, especially since most police forces are also using "instant on" or laser sytems.

What I've found to be really effective lately is the WAZE program. I use it in my Lotus through the Apple Car Play interface.

With the laser speed detection systems, radar detectors are obsolete. I miss the days when a good "fuzz buster" could give me peace of mind if I were in a hurry.

As has been pointed out, radar detectors are so passee. You need a CB radio! That way the truckers can tell you when they see a "Smokey in the Grass". I, of course, have no personal experience of this. My parents told me about it!

Thanks, all. You can tell it's been 15-20 years since I've had one. I can't believe the anti-detection technology can't catch up with the detection technology. I guess that's why the fighter jet companies focus on jamming and stealth.

Cobra...I’ve only ran into laser once. Most radars I run into have been ka; old school radar.

One could try driving the speed limit or close too, but that's no fun.

Here, police use only Ka band and lasers. I use old Valentine One set in mode for Europe. Maybe, I will buy the new one.

Saved me many times also against lasers. With laser, you must be really fast reacting and braking in the fraction of second. Best chance is you got the laser warning when they are shooting car in front of you, you have time to slow down before you get shot. I also use Waze all the time, so I know about police others reported.

Also there are fully automatic laser jammers here, it can be mounted to your car. Time to time lidars are not reliable and do error measurement. When you have laser jammer, it will detect and jam lidar. Now you slow down and switch off jammer. They will measure you again, they got good readings and no suspect you jam them. If you let it on, they will not be able to measure you and maybe stop you.

It has been ten years since I have used any speed detection equipment.

I wrote a lot of citations to people who had laser and radar detectors.

I understand the lasers and radars have gotten better.

I do not know if the laser and radar detectors have gotten any better.

The best way not to get a citation is not to drive overly fast.

Yeah, the name 'Trans Am' is Latin for bust me. I recall several years ago when Jeff Cooper had one of his students (who will go unnamed but was in the USAF) +got him some radar scrambling paint that we use on our jets to paint on his Mercedes. The col. did like to drive fast. I love the story. tu2

I have my cars permanently wired to power a Valentine One as a matter of routine. I have them kept up to date at Valentine's office, which is not far from where I live. Yes, there are more false alarms these days, but a current radar/laser detector still earns its keep.

Years ago I kept radar detectors in my Porsches. Now I just drive slower in my Ford pickups. Sometimes wisdom does come with age...

Sometimes! I recall the story about 2 cops who set up a speed trap outside of Ft. Sam in S.A. Somehow the A.F. were doing training that day with their radar seeking missiles. When that tested missile went over the squad car low + fast they had a cow, + was afterward warned by the base commander that they should consider themselves lucky that it wasn't armed. I always loved that story.

The best protection is the tiny little needle that is kept pointed on, or just below the speed limit!

Here in N Texas not sure it matters. Everyone on the freeways and toll way around town drive 80.
If you drive 80 on I 45 North or South of town you will get run over.
I kid you not, driving back from my farm into Dallas on I 45 going north. You better drive a minimum of 90.
There are no cops on the highways these days.
That is A LOT of traffic driving that speed!

Here, in Europe, we drive faster on highways. In Czech Republic, there is highway limit at 130 km/h (80.8 MPH), but the most drivers of passenger cars go 150-160 km/h (93-100). I believe, to 150 km/h, police will tolerate it.
