Thanks.......

I know that barrel makers and gun companies publish elaborate break in procedure for their barrels.

Here is mine.

50 to 100 strokes through the barrel with a patch saturated with a JB bore-paste/Kroil mix.

Mount scope and re-assemble

I had some Federal Premium 150 gr. Sierra SPBT factory loads which I used at 25 yds to get on paper. (shots 1 & 2)

Next, try at 100

Shots 3-5, 150 gr. Factory

Next try my go to 270 load,130 gr. Nosler Ballistic tips over 60 gr. H4831 SC

Well it would seem from the following group, that the rifle is fouled in and that it likes the 130 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips.

Three touching at 100 yds.

I think I'll stop there before I screw things up!

To say the least, I am jazzed.

Ya!

10/4

I went to my hill country "beer lease", Wed thru Sat........

best I could do........

trapped these and employed a Glock 43/9mm, 45 ACP/230 Gr. Hardball, and 12 ga.,3", 00 Buck. Got 10 out of 13 in the sounder.

sometimes it's up close and personal/

a perfect pattern!

I did not sit out for hogs due to the heat. It was 94 on Wednesday and 95 on Friday. Worked mostly.

I'm heading to south Texas to my "Deer Lease" tomorrow, may stay thru Friday/Saturday. Hope to perforate some hoglets with the Extrem then.

Will post pix if any perforated.

ya!

Very sweet looking rifle...

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

That rifle is stunning...just gorgeous.

I hope you sanitized it properly after toughing that muddy porker, though Big Grin

Great way to break in that rifle, by the way!

Nah, he had not been dead long enough for the fleas to start looking for another home/body. Just wiped the dust off, and will wipe it down with some Kroil and lemon oil later today.

Just fer shitz-n-giggles I had someone ask about the stock style and drop at the heel, here are my thoughts........

By my reck-0-nin the Merkel has about 1" of drop at the comb, a skosh under 2.5" drop at the heel

and +/- 3.5" of drop between the centerline of the scope and the heel.

and here is a pix of a Rem 700 chambered for the 338-06 AI. Typical synthetic stock with no comb.

+/- 1" drop at heel and comb. Two inch drop between the center of the optic and the heel.

At my advanced age, my eyesight and the type of shooting i do, I typically employ scopes on my rifles rather than irons. I read somewhere that when mounting a scope one should close his eyes, shoulder his rifle and before opening his eyes get what is in his mind the perfect position, then open his eyes, then adjust accordingly.

So let's see. Both rifles have 1" drop at the comb, but a difference of 1.5" between the center-line of the scope and the heel on the two rifles.

I find that the low saddle mounts, the positioning of the S & B and the 3.5" drop lines up perfect and gives me a very instinctive and comfortable cheek weld plus a whole sight picture, and is much more "instinctive" than the 2" drop on the Remington. When repeating the process with the Remington, I have to lower my cheek to get that same perfect sight picture. Now that I think about it, may have to change out the rings/bases on the Remington for something a skosh higher.

Of course, since I'm short, fat, bald and old, YMMV.

Gee-Dub, that is one fine rifle! The black-out side plates are very elegant.

My K1 is in 7mm Rem Mag and my wife has a K3 Stutzen in 7x57r. Both are incredible shoots and absolutely wonderful to carry.

I can't wait to see that rifle hunted some more!

Regards,

Robert
