Fixing up a Stevens 44 ... making new lever and breech block pins ... discovered the pin is tapped 8-28 for the retaining screw. But there is no such tap available as best I can tell. I suppose I could go with 8-40 and then make new retaining screws as well, but does anyone know where I can get an 8-28 tap?

I have had custom taps made before; they are $50 each and you have to order ten.
Not worth it; Make a new pin and/or retap it to 8-40.

Wow that's a good one! Here's a couple ideas-

Grainger supposedly sells screws in 8-28:
https://www.grainger.com/produ...ew-8-28-x-3-8-25WH70

Might want to give them a call and ask if they have a source for taps or even thread chasers, These are for Broan fans, maybe if you know anyone associated with servicing Broan appliances they may have a tap to loan, rent, or sell.

Now, what I'm curious about is if it would work grinding then case hardening a tap out of one of those 93 cent screws.

Lastly, an 8-32 tap has a close fit hole size of 0.16950 in and a #10-28 has a close fit hole size of 0.19600 in. I'm too busy getting over a chest infection right now to pull out a pencil to see if you can try to shave a #10 down to a #8 and have the threads work but a 10-28 china tap on ebay can be had for $4 shipped. Just another avenue to consider.

for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

Thanks guys, I ended up tapping the pins 10-32 and making new screws, as I had both tap and die on hand. Those pins have a tricky spline on them on one side.

Yes CPA offers them, last time I tried to get some though I was put on the never never list.

Anyone need an 8-28 Stevens screw?
