Wonder how your half ton truck hauling 12000 lbs would hold that load going down a mountain pass with the little motor?

No comparison. The diesel in a full size compareable F250/350 would win every time. The diesel is also a lot more expensive to purchase and maintain.
Silly debate to be honest. The thread was about the Ecoboost, not how they compared to full sized diesel trucks.


My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I drove 2060 miles, 38:30 hrs, 20.5 mpg on my trip from Orlando to Houston and back.

I think the main criticism of the full size big 3 trucks is are they too expensive and too big to park. Technically they are great vechiles.

Yes it is foolish to say that the half ton ecoboost is rated to haul 12000 lbs. That was my point.It isn't a big truck. I too will keep my diesel that gets almost 20 mpg and still able to pull 16000 lbs well.

I have a 2013, just turned 120,000 miles. No issues except for a blow off valve sensor with 25,000. But I'm also pretty anal with maintenance, oil changes and such. I tow a 5th wheel camper thats 10,000lbs loaded, for 20,000 of the total mileage and does fine with max tow package 3:73 gears, E rated Michelins, roadmaster active suspension. However, I know some have had problems with ecoboost, I think with all vehicles its a matter of being lucky and getting a good one from the start.

My nephew who has been a ford mechanic for 25 years told me that the ecoboost engine has been around for some time, it was used in the hi performance Taurus, they just tweaked it to be compatible to what a truck engine needs to do. As far as troubles mainly owner induced by improper maintenance.

I also read a comparison between what engine is better in the ford, the 5.0 litter V* or the eco boost. The test indicated the eco was better for towing and 5.0 was better for hauling heavier loads in the bed

I wrestled on what engine to go with, the 3.5 eco or the V8. In the end the Eco won because it delivered all its torque around 2,500 rpm compared to the V8's 3,850 rpm. Plus the eco was rated about 3 miles higher in both city and highway driving.


My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Well, 32,200 miles and my 2016 3.5 L Ecoboost started smoking this past Saturday... blue oil smoke. I'll be visiting the dealership where I bought it this week, anyone want to take bets on what they say it might be and how willing they are to repair it on their dime? A mechanic friend says he figures either the turbo is going bad or a ring is stuck. Pretty good truck otherwise.

Looks like a bad motor in my truck and for those of you with the 2.7L motor, look up Ford TSB 17-0007. Lots of trucks affected by this TSB.

Yes, it is, but I suspect they will try to find a way to try and make me pay...their "engine internals specialist" is working on the problem. i imagine he is poring over all of the data in the computer trying to see if I over revved the motor or if it shows I towed more than the rated capacity, or used a tuner of some sort something like that. I'll see in a couple of days.

I've got a 13 ecoboost and love it. Only issue I've had was a coolant temp sensor, and then it started doing the ecoboost rattle that trucks built in 2012 until early 13 get after sitting overnight. Has to do with the cam phasers leaking down. I've done enough research on it to write a dissertation but still cannot decide how big of a deal I want to make of it. Blackstone oil analysis says my engine is one of the best 3.5 ecos they have in their database.

Boosted motors are going to have more blow by and fuel in the oil than NA motors. I installed a catch can on my ecoboost to help with this, and also to keep it from spraying sludge back into my motor and potentially caking on the back of the intake valves. It's pretty amazing what that thing pulls out.

I don't get the mileage I thought I would, but then again I drive it pretty hard. If I baby it I can get around 15 in town. 18-19 highway best case. However, I think I need to replace my upstream o2 sensors as I have had an intermittent CEL on the right bank. I have read that replacing o2 sensors and cleaning the three MAP sensors really helps restore MPG and performance if it drops. We will see.

I will definitely be buying another ecoboost.

That mileage is poor, especially for a product that used increased mileage over a V8 as a selling feature. Why pay an extra $750+ premium over a V8 to get at least 10-15% worse mileage?

The in city traffic gas mileage is great with the eco boost and the acceleration is a blast. Highway gas mileage has been less than EPA - 21 mpg.

It's not the engine but the pre-aluminum truck that weighs 1000 pounds more.

The eco boost and New aluminum body go well together.
