After 17 and a half years, and just under 450,000 miles, the old girl drove away from the homestead for the last time this week.

In her place, this sexy new model arrived. Same specs. Grey, 4 door, 4WD, 2500 Heavy Duty, Cummins. Looking forward to the next 500,000 miles or so!!

Taking delivery at home from the dealership.

Good service from your Ram 2500. tu2

My 2004 Ram 1500 Laramie 4WD 5.7 L hemi at 165,000 miles runs ok. Aside from tires, shocks and brake wear not without issues along the way - steering rack, CV joints, ball joints, 1 broken valve spring, steering cooler, front wheel bearings, a few sensors, coolant pump, body rust. Surprised the alternator hasn't blowed yet. Keeping it as a beater truck.

That's the reason I held on to mine as long as I did. I worked throughout Texas in the oil and gas business for more than 10 years, requiring weekly trips from the DFW area to far West TX or South TX. Lots of miles, hence the 450K I put on it. It was a great "beater" truck in that I really didn't care how far or often I needed to drive it.

In my 2004's case (purchased in late 2003), outside tires and brakes of course, I replaced the fuel injectors at 300,000 miles, replaced the shocks once, 2 new rear end U joint (about 175,000 miles each), 2 lift pumps (about 200,000 miles each), and one electronic throttle position sensor. Had a minor electrical short in it for the life of the truck that would cause the windshield wiper to swipe one time every once in awhile. That's all I ever had go wrong with it. Not bad for 17 and a half years and all those miles, hence going RAM again.

I think there is a big difference between the 1500 and the Heavy Duty models however. The HD's are built more robust, especially with the Cummins engine. I always thought the old girl had PLENTY of power, or rather, torque, at around 640 lb/ft. This new one has 1,047 lb/ft!! Good Lord!!!

Keeping my Ram 1500 as a beater to reduce wear and tear on my recently purchased new Silverado 1500 RST 4WD. Drive Ram 1500 in the mud, snow, salt and on gravel no hesitation.

Nice Todd. Always tough to see an old friend drive away.

We are waiting for a transmission change to ZF or Allison in the Chassis Cab 5500 and then we are buying to build up a new flatbed with service boxes to haul the Bigfoot Camper.

It's gonna be hard to say goodbye to "Big Butt" our '06 Cummins Black Dually.

Todd, any particular reason you decided to replace the old girl now? Just time? I sure like that new one! Not keen on all the emissions controls though.

My '06 is very similar to your '05, but with only 130k miles so far. I'll probably retire, and maybe even die, with it.

I had worked it pretty hard over the years. It was really just time to get a new one. I'm confident it would go another 400,000 miles with only the normal maintenance items, except maybe the tranny. The engine was as strong as ever but I was still on the original transmission, and that includes no work of any type done on it. I pulled a 40' fifth wheel for several years and again, never had any issues but we all know the transmission is the weak link in the Cummins power train. I expect the tranny will need a rebuild sometime in the future so I thought now is a good time. Also being in the construction business, I get the tax write off this year.

There were some issues with the stereo in that the old one didn't have an AUX input and had a multi-CD changer that had stopped working awhile back. So I was limited to Sirrus/XM. Didn't have the option to stream music. This new one has Apple Car Play which I was first introduced to on the Lotus I bought last year. I REALLY like that feature from the ability to stream music, connect to Waze navigation, and the phone interface for calls, etc.

Really, everything just kind of lined up to being the right time for a replacement. I hear you on the emissions stuff. The dealership filled it with the emmissions additive and it's only got about 400 miles on it so far, so I haven't had to refill it yet. We'll see how much of a hassle that is soon. What really surprised me is the torque on the new one. It feels more urgent to accelerate with just a little throttle. Found out the old one had something like 660 lb/ft which I always thought was very strong. The new one has 1,047 lb/ft!! Will be interesting to pull something for the first time. I'm also surprised by how quiet the new engine is.

Nice looking truck of yours! I like the color! Smiler It looks like you've taken really good care of it. With only 130K miles, you've got another 20 years with that one I'm sure!!!

The particulate filter is the weak link in the emissions system in newer Cummins with DEF. Read up on them. Most folks did "deletes" up here but the EPA is aggressively prosecuting deletes now and no shops will do them and no US programers will write the code to the delete.

The reason I constantly have folks try and buy my 96 12V and 06 dually.

For comparison my company fleet new pickup is scheduled for disposal after about 3 years or 70,000 miles on the odometer because reliability is deemed to become problematic. Business need for reliable late model vehicles.

I'd say that 3 years or 70,000 becoming reliability problematic was based on a Ford, not a Chevy. I'd expect the Chevy to go twice that.

That's a basic Ranch Hand grill guard that my brother and I augmented a little. We replaced all the mounting hardware with grade 8. We pulled the factory tow hooks off and moved them to the outside of the grill guard frame. Then we used some heavy oilfield pipe to fabricate a center cross-piece, into which we built a 2" receiver. The winch is set up with quick disconnects so it can be used front or rear. Not quite the full bumper replacement I would have liked, but it's much less expensive, and considering my brother's fab/welding skills, likely much stronger!

Same here. I have had several offers for this truck that are more than I paid for it used in 2012 with 75k miles. The fact that it is a six-speed manual makes it very desirable on the used market.

The 6 Speed is sought after. If your truck was a longbed dually it would be the holy grail

Here's the 12V

I don't really have much use for a dually; those training wheels make it pretty much useless on our narrow desert/forest trails. When I bought this truck we didn't even have a camper, let alone a fifth wheel, so the short bed was actually preferred for off-road mobility. Now that we have and regularly tow a fifth wheel, I do wish for the longer bed. I saw a truck just like mine, with 97k miles and a long bed sell locally for $29k.

I have always loved your red and silver Dodge. Those mid-90s are still my favorite Dodge truck of all time. I can't believe it looks as good as it does after a life in the snow of Alaska. My gray Dodge looks good when slicked up, but upon close inspection one will note a lot of desert pinstriping. Detracts a little, but I take comfort in knowing that it earns its living around here. Smiler

Big Red has his share of character marks when you look close but zero rust. It even lived outdoors for probably half its life with me since 2000. Now has the pleasure of a garage.
