A Great Desert Morning

My 5 year old skipped school this morning to go shooting with me. We headed southeast of Vegas on a road I hadn't been on in a few years when we spotted out first sight.

He's an old one, with lot's of battle scars and wear and tear.

After shooting for a while we started working our way home when we spotted this beast on the side of the hill about 80 yards away. He wasn't too concerned with us since we didn't get out of the Jeep, and kept feeding his way up the hill.

As we rounded the last hill this group of Rams ran across the road in front of us.

Not a bad morning in the Desert.

Keith, That was indeed a special morning. I hope the little fellow remembers the wonder of it.

Just North of there a few weeks back, I came across this youngster.

308, That's a good looking ram! I was born and raised here and it still gets my blood pumping spotting sheep, and it's probably only the 4th time I've come across a desert turtle out in the wild (usually they are in someones back yard). My son was really excited, because I was excited. Plus we found a good spot to shoot with 100, 200, and 280 yard hills, the darn wind was the only negative.

The tortise is the rare one... bro in law saw one down in Sloan a year ago when changing targets...he tells me later! Of course the T had headed for safer ground. Thought the SE was off limits for shooting now? I joined Desert Sportsman's out by Red Rock to avoid the difficulties of BLM land.

My Ram picture was in Valley of Fire near the gate!

I didn't even think about that, it probably is. We were so far off the beaten path on a 4x4 road that I didn't even consider it.

We normally shoot at the Boulder Rifle Range if we stay close. All this desert out here and you have to worry where you can go plinking! Mad

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

AK as I understand it, the F&W service think they are extinct in that area... so I guess you might say so!
