Jerry, with your penchant for big calibers, I'm surprised you're not shooting a 50 BMG.

A 30 inch barrel 338-378 is awesome that's where it really shines and leaves the others behind .That's my next gun build .It adds about 300-400 fps just adding 4to 6 inches of barrel a 32 inch barrel is even better .Then the 300 grain bullets really shine .

Two weeks ago I chambered a 416 Barrett for a local guy. What a PITA, but it is shooting about 1/3 MOA with a 475 gr bullet at over 3100fps. BC is up there, and he's getting ready for the 2 mile stuff. Not my cup of tea, but Impressive performance. 40" Bartlein barrel, 1.620" diameter 1-9.75 to 9" gain twist for turned solids.

Shoot straight, shoot often.

Yeah, my enthusiasm dies when the rifle gets so heavy is to usable for hunting open terrain, let alone mountain hunting.

The world of snipping is risen to a whole nuther level of shooting, one I can't imagine, before long hunters will be able to make a kill by just thinking about it...At my age the skill of snipping is too damn complicated, so I just walk up closer and let er rip with my 06 and a 4X scope..and I still like to hunt as part of the game.

Makes running shots at 500 yards seem simple

Was a wild hunt, herd of 60 moving fast at 500 yards, I used a 30-06 with the 200 gr. Nosler Accubond, and down she went, Partner used my 338 with a 225 gr. Accubond, his cow stopped swayed a bit and fell over, needed a finiisher..both shoulder shots...I was amazed with the 30-06 as always, it kills as good as anything else as Ive come to expect..No chicken pot pies for this cowboy this winter..Biggest cow Ive ever seen 325 in the quarters, few bulls are that big..with her butt on the ground she is two feet taller than my 6-2

Since Ray pulled this thread from the ashes...

IMO getting 300-400 fps with a longer barrel is a bit of a stretch.

Here are my muzzle velocities for the four big .338 long range rifles I have:

Lapua 30 inch Brux: 2835 fps with 285 ELDs
Lapua 26 inch Savage: 2755 with 285 ELDs
Edge 29 inch Benchmark: 2830 with 300 SMKs
Edge 26 inch Lilja: 2670 with 300 Bergers

Keep in mind I load for accuracy, not velocity, but I am bumping pressures on the high end.
