I know that 1 MOA equals 1.047 inches at 100 yards. What I don't understand is why on certain ballistics calculators it doesn't hold true further out. For example, on the JBM calculator, the calculation will read +1.9 inches at 100 yards and +1.8 MOA at 100 yards (which makes sense) 0.0 inches at 200 yards and 0.0 MOA @ 100 yards -8.0 inches @ 300 yards and -2.5 MOA @ 300 yards 8 does not = 3 x 1.047 What is it that I don't understand about the relationship between MOA and inches at various distances? Mike, you left off the -2.5 MOA. 2.5 MOA X 3 X 1.047 = 7.8525. That's only .1472" off of 8" Maybe JBM figured that that would be close enough for group measurements. Frank, Thank you now I see how to interpret the number. 2.5 MOA x 1.047 x the distance/100 Mike What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. It doesn't really matter what matters is the actual size of your groups or what your rifle actual does. One can get close calculating with both actual shooting well tell you what is happening.

Did you mean to write: 8 does not = 2.5 x 3 x 1.047 ??? That is just JBM rounding to the nearest 0.1MOA because 8.0" at 300yards is 2.546MOA and JBM prints out 2.5 Also the scope height can mess up some calculators. At zero distance you're going to be a couple inches low, which would be a lot of MOA. Try experimenting with that input to the calculators and see what it says for very short ranges.

Not forgetting sight height it's in the calcualtion, Frank's post is spot on. Mike What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. I agree with P-dog...I sight in 3"s high at 100 and dead on with say an 06 at 250 yards and 4 inches high at 200 and 5 inches low at 300 and about 15 inches low at 400. give or take and inch or so.. I always check and record of the bench these numbers at these ranges before I go hunt. It can vari to some degree under some circumstances. with iron sights I tend to sight in an inch or two high at 100. and on at 150 and a few inches low at 200, my max iron sight load as a rule, but I may take a few 300 yard shots just to know the drop.. I don't over think such things, as if it ain't broke, don't go fix'en it.. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
