I have forgotten the year of introduction of the smokeless powder frames. My 86is a reblued, rebarreled, but damaged action. I was wondering the first year as I was thinking about rehabbing the old girl.

Smokeless powder 1886's will have a nickel steel barrel. The extra light weight model was introduced later in production, around the turn of the century. They have the nickel steel barrel. So, it would be in that time frame.

The barrel for the 1886 would be nickel steel for the rifle to be rated "smokeless". The extra light weight Model was introduced in March of 1897. These were chambered in .45-70. The .33 WCF were also made with the nickel steel barrel. Other calibers could have been made with the smokeless nickel steel barrel, they would be special order, and very rare. I hope that this may be of some help.

Doubt if mine is rare. 141,XXX. REBARRELED guys. Don,t know the original caliber. I.m thinking about a rebarrel in another caliber like 50 Alaskan or .45-90. I have 45-70s,458 socom and want something large? 475 Turnbull.
