My sons stainless and grey/black laminate BLR is a very accurate gun.

I picked up a blue/walnut take down BLR in 30-06. Went to the range last weekend and did some load development. Settle on 58 grns of H4350 with a 175grn Berger VLD hunting bullet, safe in mine and my son's rifle. Both rifles were grouping loads just shy of an inch, call it 9/10s. Did my final scope adjustment but was out of ammo to confirm.

Went home and thoroughly cleaned the bore. Loaded up the hunting batch and went to the range today. Fired 3 fouling shots.

Took mine time firing the next group, not so easy with a 6 1/4 lb trigger...and voila .625" inch group.

I am a happy camper.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

In my experience, takedown BLRs are quite accurate out of the box, the triggers, however... Neal Jones of Saegertown Pa. gets all my BLRs before I even shoot them. They're returned nice & crisp!

I've recently come into possession of three pre-81 blr's thanks to Biebs. Picked up a barreled action from him that didn't include a mag...and then I had to search for a mag which led to another barreled action with one mag, and another in 358 with another mag. Finally bit the bullet and bought a third mag on flea-bay for far too much. I'm thinking of re-barreling the two 308's, one a 338 federal, the other a 6.5 Creeedmoore. They are some really handy rifles and I kind of like them...

Keep one in .308
Its the most practical round for most shooting
Of course thats my opinion anyway...

I agree, but having a 308 for me is like using a 30-06. Absolutely nothing wrong with them, they just don't float my boat. I think the 338 Fed and the 6.5 Creed would be better for me and I have all the dies and brass for any of them. Not to mention resale, there's guys that would jump on either one of them if I decide to sell IMO. That 358 is the roughest of the lot, but that one is the least probable of getting re-barreled as it's a kewl little thumper... ONE of them will get rebarreled though as my daughter needs a suitable lefty rifle for next season and the Creedmore would be a good one I think.

Matt, glad you got them all sorted out. I'm getting on the levergun bandwagon of late; just got a 30-30 and a 45-70, both 26" barrel rifles.

I picked up two new BLR's this past year. First was a stainless TD .308. Only made one trip to the range with it so far but it managed to shoot right at 1 inch with some Nosler SSA blem ammo I bought.
The other one is a blued .358 but I been to lazy to mount a scope on it and take it to the range. The .308 carries a 2x7 and the .358 a 1.5x5.
Both are built very well and triggers are "ok". Would like to get in 3-4 trips to the range with each before sending them off to PA for a trigger job. Either will do a great job on whitetails at our property as doubtful we would ever shoot over 75 yards.

Snowdog,

If I had a 358 BLR and was going to use it as a less than 200 yd whitetail gun, I think would load it with some 220 grn speer flat points and a stout load of 4895.

Am sure the Speers would do a great job but I picked up a good supply of Nosler 225 Partition blems.

A .358 takedown stainless straight grip BLR is about the only rifle I'd really want today.

Well, that and a Holland double.

One can dream...but the BLR is one I'd bite on.

Robert

I just bought a stainless/walnut BLR in 358 Win. A Leupold stainless scout scope will go on it.

Biebs,

Just out of curiosity, do you have any pictures of that you can post? I didn't know Browning made a walnut/stainless version of the BLR other than that "White Lightning" version or whatever it's called. Yours sounds like a looker!

Decided to stop being lazy and mounted a Leupold 1.5x5 on my straight grip blued .358. Had a couple of boxes of Hornady 200 SP's and loaded some up with 3031 using Hornady brass.
Didn't go past 50 yards but once it was sighted in they all touched. Slim forearm makes it a little difficult to sit on the front bag.
It could benefit from a trigger job so one of these days will send it off to the smith in PA.
Seems like a genuine MOA lever action with little effort on my part.

I do have the .450 Marlin in a pistol gripped, blued edition. What I would LIKE is a take down stainless version with pistol grip, caliber of minor importance.
Anyone know if Browning has a custom shop for rifles? I emailed them a request for info on this, but, so far, have not received a reply.
