The children are always the first.
I have been to the Children's Memorial at Yad Vashem. I still remember it even though it was 12 years ago.

Being the son of a survivor and with more than a dozen relatives listed at Yad Vashem it's meaningful here each year.

We should never, ever, forgot crimes against humanity.

These sort of crimes are against us all.

My father's outfit, the 97th Infantry, liberated Flossenbürg, although he himself was miles away when they entered the camp. He never could find the words to convey the evil of the Nazi regime.

A friend, who is gone now, used to tell me he had assisted in liberating a camp within Germany. But he never told me the name of the camp or town. We only talked when it was just the two of us. We stopped when someone came up. He warned me that the same thing could happen with the troops marching into our church during a service. I hope we don't see that again. The children are the biggest loss. Be Well, Packy.

HUH? Sorry but your friend didn't know squat. When, pray tell, did German troops march into churches?
What the Nazis did was to execute 84 Generals who opposed the Nazi party.
They authorized the BrownShirts (SA), again an organ of the Nazi Party, to riot, use violence to intimidate voters, burn Jewish shops and businesses, without interference from law enforcement.
The Nazi party organized book burnings. Who needs books when you have Tucker Carlson, Rudy Giuliani, and Donald Trump telling you the truth?
Books are for intellectuals, you know, those fools whose allegiance is to scholarship, freedom of conscience and democracy. So, 1200 University professors were dismissed. the rest were required to take an oath of allegiance to Adolph Hitler and the National Socialists!
"Whoever has the youth has the future".(Adolph Hitler)
The Catholic Church thought that the communist atheists were a bigger threat than The Socialists, so they signed an agreement with Hitler. Just like the evangelicals who thought "hey, if Trump is against abortion he must be alright!"
Need more? Look it up!
Peter

Never forget indeed! At the risk of redunency, the old quote applies, "Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it.'

My Grandfather was born in the USA to German Jews that had immigrated about 3 or 4 years before his birth. His younger siblings had all been born in America, and older ones in Germany.

He spent the war clearing beaches in Normandy and Sicily, then did explosive ordnance disposal for years after until he was finally released.

I visited the Holocaust museum in DC when I was there for school. It couldn't manage it. We drove by signs for the camps regularly while living in Germany and I never was interested in that either.

Dug up MIA remains in Vietnam as part of a joint crew in 2001, that kind of broke the straw on those kinds of things in life.

Suffering is part of the human condition, I don't go looking for it.

For those of you familiar with old Austin, the hostess at Hills Cafe on South Congress had the tattoo as well.

Sorry BWW, but suffering on this scale has never been seen before. You don't have to go and look for it. And, you know what, it hasn't stopped! Witness Serbia/Croatia, Rwanda, the Uighurs etc. etc.
Suffering has always been apart of the human condition, but does it always have to be? Can't we build a better world? And isn't that what this remembrance is all about?
Peter.

No it does not have to be + there is always hope of a better world, but people need to remain aware + not let evil people get in control. As in the old adage that the devils meanest trick was convincing people he didn't exist. I totally agree with the quote from Plato, "The price of apathy is to be ruled by evil men".

Yes it always has to be, and it will always be.

Spent 20 years in the military, can't tell you how many campaigns and how many little events resulted in tons of human suffering.

I am sorry there is not a better answer than that.

I know. You can get a large amount of people to agree but then there is always that one jackleg who screws up everything for everyone.
