Interesting. I am glad they have time on their hands to do this type of thing. I certainly didn't up there, especially with the weather. I am glad I shot it and got out. If I hadn't, I would still be stuck due to weather. My guide is injured and they can't get him out. Is this ram the biggest ram in the world? No. But he is legal. It is the smallest of the Dall rams I have shot. At my age, coming from the flat lands, having the weather that we experienced and knowing the weather that was coming, I was happy to have the opportunity. It may well have been the only opportunity I got. This may well have been my last Dall hunt. It was almost certainly my last backpack hunt. There was some disagreement between the guides about how old he was . I am not going to opine because I do not know. I will say that there was significant wear on the teeth. Frankly, I was surprised at the teeth. In my book, when one is 60 years old (almost 61), from Florida, on a backpack hunt in the northern Brooks range in horrible weather and take a legal sheep at over 500 yards, it is a trophy, a very memorable trophy. I am glad I had the opportunity. I will remember it a very long time. Thanks! | |||

In my experience, guides won't take any chances if they think an animal is not legal. I am sure this one was. Back in the 80s I shot some "full curl" sheep that were indeed full curl, but dinks nevertheless. But I did them all on my own, without a guide, I took great satisfaction in that. You busted your butt for that sheep Larry and that counts for a lot in my opinion. | |||

Thanks Dave. My gear was good, even great with one exception. My Swarovski binoculars leaked. I was not happy about that. All factors considered, my conditioning was good. Had I not gotten injured a month before, it would have been better. I think my own stupidity initially made the injury worse. I already exercise 2-3 hours a day before I go to work. It is kind of hard to do more. If I had it to do over gain, I would: 1- Have stopped immediately when the injury occurred. 2- My sense of balance has always sucked. At age 60, it has not gotten any better. I would have done some balance exercises. 3-While we do not have rocks here, it occurred to me this weekend that there are rocks on the jettys around some inlets. I might have benefited from a few trips to those. 4- I would definitely take more books. I had no idea how long I would get stuck in a tent up there. Three and a half days in a single stretch sucks. 5-I would take one of those super light fold up chairs. 6- Knowing now how long I got stuck in the weather, there a couple of places that I would climb to and just sit and wait on caribou. It could not be any worse than sitting in a one man tent for three and a half days. | |||

Larry, When we were in Barney's adjusting up Joyce pack frame, she noticed the Crazy Creek chair on the floor and sat in it. We ended up leaving with two. Not sure at this point I would haul one on a Sheep hunt but they sure did make glassing on our recent Bou hunt 1000 times note comfortable. I added a small piece on closed cell foam as well for butt comfort. Thanks all. I had another thought today. I come from the flat lands. When I get to the mountains, the mountains look awfully intimidating. Several days later, those mountains that looked impossible when I first got there were no big deal. Mind over matter. | |||

20 steps at a time, anything is possible. Our recent Caribou trip was the first time Joyce actually packed a fairly heavy load and she had to since we dropped two Caribou in the same spot. Three trips later we were both pretty spent but she remarked how she couldn't believe she had just done that. I was mumbling Crossfit terminology to her as we packed our way out. We are not presently in the best shape we've been in for the last three years but the shape she was in three years ago before the cancer was beast mode level. I really believe the determination and mental toughness to get into that shape proved to her that her mind could will her body to do what it didn't want to. I too believe that. It's your mind over matter Larry. Nice. Larry, when I had mine aged and sealed I walked into the F&G office and they did it in front of me. I wondered as a non-resident how folks got info on their Sheep like that. Did F&G contact you to give you the age? Larry: A sheep guide taught me a neat trick: instead of trying to count the rings on the whole horn, draw a line from the eye through the skull, count the rings above that line, and double the count. Your ram is ten by that method. | |||
