Not sure what you mean about the cut up the back of the neck. I've never skinned one like that. The thickest skin on a bear is around the throat and it's still not that thick, but pretty tough.

Ah ha how dumb of me ,I was obviously thinking of caping a stag out when I wrote that...doh.

Well back to the thickness what would it be roughly,we down under thought that it might be ultra thick on a monster bruin.

I would guess between 1/8 - 1/4". I'll measure one tomorrow and let you know.

I work in a taxidermy shop in Anchorage, so I get to play with bears every day this time of year. I fleshed an old brown bear today, about 9' squared. The skin around the neck and throat was pretty close to 1/4" thick.

Thank you,its really interesting that they are so thin compared to say a sambar stag that can go up to nearly an inch almost and they are only a deer, albeit its thick of course to cope with raking antlers in battle etc and we were thinking much the same thing with your big boys in battle with one another.

It really is surprising how thin a bear's skin is. Aside from the thick stuff around the neck, the rest of it is very thin. I worked on a black bear today that had a fresh wound behind the head about 4" long. It was pretty new
