Good morning crew, I have a question re cbp form 4457. I am departing for Zambia in a couple months. I am traveling emirates thru dubai then to lusaka.
Question is do I need new forms. My current ones are from june 2012 and show 06/92 date in bottom right corner. I know there has been discussion regarding this in RSA who seem to not be able to figure anything out. But is Zambia smarter?

Just to be on the safe side, I would get the current 4457.

Get new 4457’s. I hunted Zambia last fall with a current 4457 and they were easy to deal with. Took about 15 minutes but everyone was professional and friendly.

You are flying the best way to get to Lusaka. Emirates gets a big thumbs up from me. If time allows, extend your layover in Dubai. It’s a fascinating place.

Last summer, in Jo'burg, the police looked directly at the upper right of the 4457 for a current year date. It always pays to be on the safe side--get a new one!

Question? My daughter is setting up our travel to Zim in a couple weeks and has on on Emirates through Dubai and says they require a gun license,
Is that simply the 4457 ?

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

Phil,

The 4457 is what they are looking for and make sure you have the latest printing.

Phil, to expand a bit on Mark’s 4457 comment... this probably doesn’t need to be said, but just in case; you need permission from Emirates to fly with guns. The 4457 is part of what they need. Just be sure Emirates has issued your permission to travel with guns. Once you have that, they’re very easy to deal with.

Be aware - the "current" edition of the 4457 expires on 8/31/2019.

Also, some have been reporting that SAPS in RSA have been requiring the 4457 be issued in the past six months.

You'll only have to deal with SAPS and the temp firearm import form 520 IF you are transiting J'berg and have to claim your luggage/firearms. Upto a couple of years ago, if your transit stayed overnight you could check all the way through. In the past couple of years "they" now limit the max length of layover to 6 hrs before having to claim and recheck luggage/firearms.

SAPS is aware that this year the 8/31/2019 expiry date is the latest edition of the 4457. That of course does not rule out a hassle with a policeman needing some lunch money. If you are with a meet/greet/gun permit service you shouldn't have any issues.
