PLANS FOR WORLD’S SCARIEST BRIDGE AFOOT

MARC NKWAME in Arusha 18/07/2018

IF China’s Huashan is scary, the proposed see-through gang-plank bridge over the active Oldonyo L’engai volcanic mountain will be frightening and possibly the world’s most daringly spellbinding tourist feature.

“We have already mapped the potential area to build the 15-kilometre bridge to link the ‘Mountain of God,’ (Oldonyo Lengai) in Ngaresero and Empaakai Crater in the Ngorongoro Conservation to avail daring tourists with a thrilling adventure of their lifetime,” said Engineer Joshua Mwankunde.

Engineer Mwankunde, the Manager in-charge of the newly established Ngorongoro-Lengai Geopark under which the ‘scary volcano bridge’, is envisaged, was speaking during the first ‘Tourism Investors’ Forum,’ which the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) has organised in association with Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) and Hotel Association of Tanzania (HAT) to deliberate on strategies to venture further in tourism based enterprises.

Natural Resources and Tourism Deputy Minister Japhet Hasunga who opened the forum said improvised attractions were in line with the government’s target to record 2 million tourists by 2020.

And, with the ongoing revival of the national carrier, Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), investors in the country’s tourism industry have embarked on mission to expand areas and establish more lodges, hotels and campsites within the maiden Ngorongoro-Lengai Geopark.

ATCL management recently announced plans to roll out the proposed Dar-Beijing route, shortly after the national flag carrier acquired its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Over 25 different firms specialising in travel, tourism and hospitality industries have hatched the initiative believing that that the revived airline will bring in the country more visitors from the far east countries, especially Chinese who are more interested in geological formations, spellbinding sceneries and country’s topography as opposed to the western visitors who prefer wildlife.

“The Nasera Rock, which is one of the giant stones in the Northern Zone, can make good camping site for tourists but the nearby road, which connects NCAA with Loliondo will have to be moved further so that the location may get the required privacy for tented abodes,” argued TATO Chairman Will Chambulo.

NCAA was recently mandated to establish the country’s ‘Geological form of tourism,’ known as ‘Geopark’, and has so far listed maiden the ‘Ngorongoro-Lengai’, Geopark in association with the European Union (EU) and UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The Chinese government though its embassy in Dar es Salaam recently injected about 25bn/- to boost the development of this new type of tourism.

There are only two Geoparks in Africa, one in Morocco and the latest in Tanzania.

Lingai and the surrounding area is sort of a jewel in the burning plain just as it is. It would be an absolute abomination to build a bridge over it. I know folks will say other special sites like the Grand Canyon have been commercialized for many years but a bridge over Lingai just makes me nauseated.

they were just commenting on your driving. LOL.

so they are going to build a 9.5 mile long see through bridge over a volcano, and get a million people to walk across it in 1.5 years?
I'm not even gonna try to spell the engineers name but it isn't inspiring a lot of confidence.
