I have a couple of 6.5x284 rifles I would like to turn into .270's Do I need to just have these rifles re-barrelled??

why are you wanting to change cases and caliber?

Usually the 284 case is on a short action. The 270 needs a long action. I have built a 6.5x284 on a push feed Model 70 & it worked fine.

the rifle actions these are built on are long actions, I just don't know about the other specifics of whether re-barreling is all I need to do. I am simply wanting to narrow my range of calibers down, and the 270 is my preference.

Hard to say if going from 284 to 270 would happen without any additional work. Those cases are not of the same shape, or even close. Might take a magazine change, might not.

Probably presents tha same problem as the 6.5,,,,, no off the shelf ammo..

put a 270 round in the magazine and try to feed it.
that will be the big hurdle.
if it won't go just make the gun a 284 win or 7.5X55 swiss, and simplify in another direction.

It will be an easy conversion; most Sako magazines are a sheetmetal box and the feed lips can be tweaked to make a 270 feed. If it won't already.

The 284 case has a rebated rim. What this means is the case is "fatter" at the base than the normal 30-06 family of ctgs which share the same boltface. The fatter case requires (ideally) feed rails that are more open, but whether the person who built the rifle opened the rails or not we cannot say. There is a risk that your standard 30-06, 270 etc will jump the rails. As someone else said, you can test for this condition but filling the mag with 270 ctgs and trying to (part) cycle them.

Frankly, you would be better off selling the rifle to someone who really wants that caliber, and buying a 270 on the same or some other action. The 6.5-284 caliber is respected by the long distance shooting fraternity. If the rifle is accurate and in good condition, don't mess with it.

There are no flies on those 6.5-284's and since it's on long actions you can take full advantage of loading the longer heavier bullet out of the powder space, taking throating into consideration and blow the doors off the 270. Yeah the 270 is a great round, but it's blown out of proportion especially by Jack O'Conner.
