The felines are the descendants of domestic pets and kill millions of small native animals each year.

A recent Alice Springs contest featured wild cat casserole. The meat is said to taste like a cross between rabbit and, perhaps inevitably, chicken.

But wildlife campaigners have expressed their dismay that Australia's wild cat now finds itself on the nation's menus.

During WWII my Daddy and 2 of his buddies got separated from his unit for a day and a half after a battle in German occupied France and all they had to eat was a cat they shot and cooked at an old French farmhouse, he said they all got sick after that. I'll sample most anything but that makes me think twice about cat. I had a dog many years ago that would kill them and eat them. But to each his own.

The natives here are keen on them.

They just run them down on foot.
Cats are a 100yrd sprinter at best and so they are easily chased down and despatched by a determined hunter armed with nothing but a stout stick in open country.

Not for me.
I've shot and skinned a few and the meat looks pretty dark and tough to me....
Each to their own I suppose.

Have used the 270 on them as it is most effective, but I don't eat them.

tried it once while I was working with Norforce.
Not exactly the kind of thing you would spend $50 on over dinner.
But the locals seemed to like it.

BTW, Australia doesn't have any native cats. Just ferals.

Cheers, Dave.

Boomstick

We're at the Presido of Monterey. I'm looking for a place to get a pig that won't cost me a weeks salary or have to drive all the way to Leggitt.
