Government says there has been an uptick in handgun purchases since introduction of new gun legislation

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announced that the Liberals will be introducing a temporary ban on the importation of restricted handguns. Medincio was joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly and Liberal MP Yvan Baker. (Robert Krbavac/CBC)

The federal government plans to fast-track a ban on the import of handguns into the country without the approval of Parliament using a regulatory measure that comes into effect in two weeks, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announced Friday.

The change will last until a permanent freeze is passed in Parliament and comes into force.

The government tabled gun control legislation in May that includes a national freeze on the importation, purchase, sale and transfer of handguns in Canada.

That law did not pass before Parliament took its summer break, and is set to be debated again when MPs return to Ottawa in the fall.

In the meantime, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said she has the authority to ban any import or export permit in Canada.

"Working with Marco, we came up with this idea of creating this new system of requiring permits," Joly said. "But meanwhile, we will deny any permits."

The temporary ban will prevent businesses from importing handguns into Canada, with a few exceptions that mirror those in the legislation tabled in May.

"Given that nearly all our handguns are imported, this means that we're bringing our national handgun freeze even sooner," Mendicino said. "From that moment forward, the number of handguns in Canada will only go down."
Handgun imports have been on the rise

Government trade data shows Canada imported $26.4 million worth of pistols and revolvers between January and June — a 52 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

PolySeSouvient, a group that represents survivors and families of victims of gun violence, applauded the government's approach to freezing imports in a statement released Friday.

"This is a significant and creative measure that will unquestionably slow the expansion of the Canadian handgun market until Bill C-21 is adopted, hopefully this fall," said Nathalie Provost, a survivor of the Ecole Polytechnique shooting in Montreal in 1989.
Liberals blame Conservatives for holding up legislation

Conservative public safety critic Raquel Dancho said the move targets law-abiding citizens and businesses rather than illegal and smuggled guns.

"Instead of addressing the true source of gun crime in Canada, the Liberal government is unilaterally banning imports without parliamentary input, impacting a multi-billion dollar industry and thousands of retailers and small businesses, with very little notice," Dancho said in a statement after the announcement.

In the announcement, Mendicino accused the Official Opposition of obstructing the passage of the bill and other gun control measures. Dancho, meanwhile, said the Conservatives support addressing illegal gun smuggling and accused the Liberals of creating a wedge issue out of gun control while making communities less safe.

Mendicino said he's been visiting land borders over the summer to make sure the government has the staff and technology in place to address illegally smuggled weapons as well.

Not true, there'll still be lots smuggled in, betting more than legally, The legal gun owners are the whipping boys for an impotent government led by an idiot. Our gun crime has a racial under tone to it that the government wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole for fear of offending their voter base. Their buy back program is out to lunch. Own a .50 Barrett or Steyr and the want to give you less than 2500. for it. Furthermore, many of these guns are not registered, so they have no idea how many or who has them.

The vast majority of the "gun violence" is gang violence. Well documented and said frequently, even in the mainstream media. There is also the racial undertone mentioned by Grizzly Adams1...but you don't dare say anything or you are immediately destroyed in social media and mainstream media. That said, all you have to do is look at the names of those involved and the pictures in the news of accused and deceased and there leaves little doubt.

Trudeau and his minions have however, focused on attacking the law abiding gun owners and the firearms retailers. Easy targets. But don't worry, our fearless leader will be out there jetting around the globe trying to show everyone just how green and woke he is...hypocritical bastard!

WE need the Libs out in the worst way. Let's hope the Conservative party can get its act together and make it happen in the next election.

Australia has been there , New Zealand has been there . Law abiding gun owners get f**ked over and criminals run away laughing .

If I found myself in similar situation again , I believe my response may be somewhat differant to the last "steal back" scenario.

When one realizes that taking away firearms is not about crime control.

But about people control then you are getting some where.

These governments love crime it gives them the excuse they need to take your guns away.

p dog shooter...I agree, but the thing is most hunters and shooters already know this. It is a matter of getting the rest of the ravening hoard to understand this and that is not so easy. Some do understand this but they are grossly outnumbered by those who never will.

that is the big problem: we had friends (no more) that contacted me as they wanted an handgun and they cannot believe how they needed a different license ... they believed their lord and the media: easy to buy an handgun ...

kelly ii doubt most gun owners are supportive of the fiasco for the handguns coming soon ... look what happened with the ar15 and derivative only 300 canadians stoop up to challenge in court on 65000 ar15 registered gun orgs and cpc did not show any interest on that for the individuals ...

most people do not beleive we need handgun for any reasons and up to the time we can find a way to get proper self defense castle law, autorisation to carry and property rights it will be very hard.

Phil...I get what you are saying. It is a case of "it doesn't affect me and so I do not care"...most shooters/hunters in Canada do not have an AR 15 and most do not have handguns. There are many hunters who just do not see a use for the AR 15, just as there are many who do not think you need handguns. It is not their interest and so once again they do not care.

But now we are seeing all sorts of rifles and what not that are making the list of firearms which the gov't plans on banning going forward and being on the list of the buy back program. It is making more people stand up and pay attention.

Even so, I do not think it will be until the govt goes forward with putting all semi-autos and pumps, levers etc on the list, (as has happened with our friends down in Aus and NZ) that we will finally see more people get involved and stand up to the govt asshats.

Part of the problem is that many generations of Canadians have been born and raised in a time when handgun ownership has been problematic and discouraged. After all handguns have had to be registered since before WW II.

In any event, I agree it is going to be very hard for us all going forward. Unless something strange happens that shifts public sentiment in the right direction, the future is bleak for firearms owners in Canada. We have been dealing with the death by a thousand cuts for decades and the aggressive Liberal anti-firearms approach is speeding things up. Trudeau is very much a proponent of the UN's Agenda 21 and their Small Arms policy.

To late.

The old saying is very true.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Should read no more legal handguns coming into Canada. There probably is thousands smuggled in every year. Putting more people at border crossings won’t do a thing, there are hundreds of trails crossing the border that aren’t watched.

I guess if you're hunting in grizzly country in Canada, you'd better keep your rifle glued to your side with a round chambered and the safety on.
