I think I read somehere that the 3 1/4 version usually were .411..? But do also .408 exist in this caliber..?

What is your opinion of the 3 1/4 versus the 3"..?

450-400 3" in my experience are .411 but some shoot .410 better.

More variation in the 450-400 3 1/4" in the black powder version: from .406 to .411, yet the nitro seem to be common at .410.

Neither is better than the other. Modern brass and case construction eliminates some of the shortfalls of the earlier 3 1/4" version.

I guess it all depends on what brass is available and what diameter bullets are available of the correct weight.

I had an Army Navy 450/400 3.25" and it had a bore diameter of .408". If yours happens to be a .408 bore I have brass and bullets available.

I think its safe to say that back in the Day they nashed their teeth and said "close enough" Old world doubles all need the bores slugged, then play with diameter to see what shoots best keeping in mind that you have two barrels that may be considerably different, then you split the difference and play the game...Mostly it works out just fine or close enough for guv-ment work.. Eeker
