Bockhunter,

Thanks for sharing these videos with the AR group. I appreciate your mentioning me along with Chris, Mark, and Peter. Mark sends his best wishes to you. The 2013 Heym Challenge was a great event. Success was assured through all of the hard work and planning efforts by Heym management, their skilled craftsmen, master gunmakers, and the fabulous staff!

Best always,
Shawn

Interesting. Looking at the second video, the thing that caught my eye was the now-mandatory hunter using the African carry himself. I loved the scene where he shoots and then restores the rifle to this ridiculous position, vision speeded up. Not only did it suggest crazy arrogance (this animal will never get up!) but it reminded me of the joke gunslinger who draws and reholsters so fast you see nothing.

The whole idea of the 'African carry' was that the tracker would use it and, when dangerous game appeared, the hunter would grab the rifle from behind.

If you need to carry your own heavy rifle on your shoulder (and are not worried about it pointing at someone), hold it butt forward, whence dipping it quickly will flip the barrels over top; ready in half the time.

I did not get the same feeling of arrogance as you did when I saw the fast motion from a shot to glassing. If that was the actual action that occurred following that shot Peter (the PH) was obviously not close enough where it would be an issue.

There are probably many who have read about one of the benefits of the African carry that you mentioned and also formed their opinion from that narrative. For those that have not, that particular aspect is not the whole story. Even if you read it from Taylor. :0)

We generally place our heavy doubles on our shoulders for a variety of reasons. Some of the reasons include visually indexing the barrels safely while navigating and moving, glassing easier and safely, and a very important benefit of reducing fatigue from carrying heavy rifles all day long. Having it immediately ready for action in the fastest way possible is probably not one of them. If you are in that mindset the rifle should not be on top of your shoulder pointed forward or backwards IMO. Not trying to diminish your recommendation at all, just offering some additional comment regarding African carry.

If you are anticipating a problem your rifle should be in both hands and the muzzle should not be pointed to the sky. Unless of course your hunting geese or ducks from a blind.

Your recommendation likely works very well for you and perhaps many other folks too with a double. Especially while hunting alone or while hunting with others present and not in single file and/or not while in front of someone.

Everyone should practice muzzle discipline and awareness however they prefer/choose to carry their rifle.
