In 2013 I got a Baikal 45-70side by side rifle then in 2014 I got the 30-06.
Very shortly after acquiring the 30-06, there was an ice storm. I slipped fell and sprained the joint between my right collar bone and my right shoulder. For 2 months I could barely move my arm, then with physical therapy I could use my arm again after 6 months. Then in 2015, March, my dad died from pancreatic cancer.
I went into depression and gave up on shooting for a while.

Then in 2017 I was hired for a dream job, working at a gunstore range. The week before I started I fell off a ladder and shattered my right wrist. I had to learn to shoot pistols left handed.

It was a blessing in disguise. I had to relearn everything I had known about shooting pistols for 30 years. It made me a better instructor.

Then I got my Baikal double back out again at the start of December. I filled the bolt hole in the stock with lead wich cut recoil dramatically. I took my time shoot a ladder test found a load it likes. At 50 yards it will shoot about an inch and a half group. At 100 yard it opens to about a 5 inch group for both barrels.

It has been a long ride but it felt good to finally find a load it like that doesn't hurt my wrist and shoulder. So hopefully later in this year my cousin and I will be able to go pig hunting together.

There is much more I could add to the story, but it isn't really important. Sorry if this is long and off topic but I am prod that my 45-70 is finally sighted in and I have a good load for it.

You are sklled and stong to overcome so much. Congratulations on your success and recovery. Many folks lengthen the chambers of their .45-70 doubles to .45-90 and even longer. Is such a move in your future?

No, Mr. Pappas, in this light of a rifle 45-70 is exciting enough. My shoulder and wrist could not take the extra pounding. Hopefully, I will be able to afford a bpe caliber soon. I would like to find one with exposed hammers and a Jones undercover that weighs a bit more.

Cal, Changing the chambering in a double rifle is not something I would recommend! I made that mistake on my Pedersoli 45-70 double rifle to 458RCBS which is simply a lengthening the chamber to 2.75 in, with no other changes. The rifle would regulate perfectly with two 45-70 400 gr rounds printing side by side on the target at 100 yds. The wildcat 458 RCBS rounds now are lucky to print two bullets, one from each barrel on the side of a large barn. The rifle now needs re-regulating, a price that will be higher than the price I paid for the rifle brand new from the maker.
I'm now thinking about cutting the barrels off just in front of the chambers and have a pair of barrels studded into the origenal rifle butts and chambering them for 375 flanged and regulated for 300 gr bullets, making the rifle lighter for hunting in Alaska for bear and moose. Otherwise I may as well hang the thing on the wall of my trophy room.

My Beretta 45-70DR is now being up graded to 45-90 AND re regulated with the hope it will all work out. This includes converting the fixed scope mount to Tally removable. Upon completion. I will report.

Congratulations on your situation.

I too am going to be spending much more time with all my guns, rifles, pistols and shotguns.

I sold my business and my full time contract has been satisfied. I’m now part time and will be exploring other shooting disciplines I have no experience with. I’ve always had an interest in Long range shooting. Not the hunting aspect of it.

I’ve not been to Africa in two years and my doubles have been sorely neglected.

I’m going to make up for lost time with all my stuff.

ZGunbear:

Welcome back!! Never give up. I know of what you speak for I have been to those gates of hell. This will be the first time in ten years that I will start shooting again.

Like my mother always said, "It doesn't matter how many times you fall, It's how many times you get up."

Kind regards,

No politician who supports gun control should recieve armed protection paid for by those he is trying to disarm.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways-scotch in one hand-Chocolate in the other-body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WHOO-HOO, WHAT A RIDE!!"
