Just received my copy of "The British Bore Rifle" from Cal Pappas. I am only a few chapters in, but I am enjoying it so darned much that I am thinking of rationing myself to a couple of chapters a day just to make it last.
It's that good. If you don't have a copy, do yourself a big favor and give yourself an early Christmas present!

Well, Cal opens with quotes from all the great hunters of the 19th century regarding their use of bore rifles, mostly in Africa and India. It's always a treat to revisit Baker, Gordon-Cumming, Neumann, Finaughty and others. Then there is an overview of the guns, the cartridges and the exquisitely made accessories -- molds, crimpers, sizers and the like. The color photos are simply outstanding. With the overview taken care of, we now have chapters devoted to each of the bores, starting with the 4 bores. This is followed up with a section on finding, loading for and using the bore rifles today. I am up to the chapter on 4 bores. It will be a very good day today.
P.S. The body copy is set in 14-point type, so I don't even need my bifocals to read it.

It's the book that most visiting hunters/shooters remark most on when visiting my house. It's a topic many are unfamiliar with and, as noted, the quote, anecdotes and photography are endlessly entertaining.

Cheers
Jim

Just pored over the 4-bore chapter. Guns from Hollis, Rodda, Westley Richards, William Powell and many others in exquisite detail. This is serious man candy!

Gents:
Your kind words make be blush.
The best thing about writing is the many fine and like-minded folks I've been introduced to. Many I have not met in person but consider them my friends.
Bill: Thanks for the kind words. You may like my new book on the Primer and my first on the .600. You are welcome here to shoot doubles any time.
Mike: I am delivering the Primer to you tomorrow.
Jim: The shooting shed has electricity and a wood stove. I've been shooting on the weekends in my t-shirt. Come on up when you can--and bring the AK contingent with you.
Shootaway: I know I can't add anything to your vast knowledge of doubles, and I admit most of the pics in my books are of UK-made garbage, but there are some pics of Searcy rifles you may enjoy. Feel free to rip out all the other pages and use them as fire starter and keep the ones you like.
Cheers, mates.
Cal

So I already have a few coffee table books. I am now looking for a fine trash dumpster book. I think Cal's book might well be the one I've been looking for.

Okay Gents, I just got Cal's latest book today and I am staying up late reading. It is great, lots of information, quality photos, comprehensive. And I being the geezer I am appreciate the font size. And since I am a trashy W J Jeffery .450 No. 2 guy, I love all the photos of the British rifles. Although Cal's book is certainly not limited to just Brit rifles. Anyone interested in these damn things will love this book. Five stars. Thanks Cal.
