I'm interested in a double in a year or so but I would really like to handle some doubles to see which would be a good fit. I live in florida if that helps.

+1, there is absolutely no better option than what Paul suggested. Good news is that your time frame is within the next year and the shows are in nine months.

Or consider wandering up here for the Alaska DRSS Doulbe Rifle Shoot on the 2nd of next month.
You'll get some hands on trigger time with classics.

What is your intended use for it? Makes a lot of difference if you want to shoot DG, or wild hogs only. Or just want a DG rifle for deer, which certainly can be done. There is a lot of research you can do before you actually handle them; but of course that is best. Some Cabelas carry DRs.

Cabelas might not mind. One fellow was more than happy to let me shoulder a Searcy at the SCI convention. He saw me looking at it through a showcase and then insisted I shoulder it.It was a very nice rifle-too bad I did not have a small camera with me.

They are actually on the Woodring Airport.

Check out their website.

Good suggestions on DSC show and Champlins.

Also, if you are in north Florida (especially NW) should be pretty easy to drive up to Thomasville, GA to see what Kevin's has on hand. I'd expect you could find at least 6-10 based on the detour we made up there a few weeks ago.

With a little more driving you could get up to West Point, Miss. to look through Steve Barnett's inventory - website currently indicates 20+ on hand...

Good hunting,

If you're in Floirida, you might check with Gulf Breeze. They'll probably have some DRs in stock.

Thanks for all the info. I'm looking for a .500 nitro express double for my first DG sffari for hippo and cape buff. I would love to go to alaska and shoot with you guys but I will be starting my masters program here soon. I may have to check out some of the mentioned places in north florida.

Kevin's in Tallahassee won't have any double rifles but there are sometimes a few in the Thomasville GA store.

If you want to go to Gulf Breeze or Steve Barnett's place call first because those places are open by appointment.

Also, I believe there is a Krieghoff dealer in Vero Beach FL.

If you have standard physical dimensions and don't need custom fitting, then there is a Merkel .500 offered in classifieds that should fit your ticket. Fair price on a solid, accurate, and dependable first double rifle. It's offered by "ebrownw2".

Good luck and enjoy your hunt.

Of course you're welcome to join our Alaska shoot on May 2 and handle AND SHOOT 20 or more fine vintage doubles. I have four for sale at present but are all black powder express doubles.
Cheers,
Cal
