I am fishing a marlin boat in the Andaman Island in India.

They are catching small marlins - 200-220 pounds, dragging them onto the boat, killing them in the process, taking pictures, then cutting of the tail and bill and throwing the fish back into the ocean.

All of it is illegal.

Truly disgusting.

Just got back to civilization.

Problem with turning them in to authorities is that it will only really impact the boat owners and the boat crew not the people doing the illegal stuff.

The boat owner was not on board. He was doing admin stuff in Hut Bay Andaman Islands. His boat could be at risk - it would destroy him.

The boat crew are young kids of Burmese background. They will be made the fall guys and face the full brunt of a flawed Indian police and legal system.

The guys doing the illegal stuff - a Kuwaiti and Indian from Bombay will get off with no impact.

The cheap bastards also stiffed the crew on tips by just walking away from the boat. Scumbags.

I am truly disgusted and angry and want to calm down before I do anything.

I have reached out to billfish foundation and other parties.

Hopefully something will be done. Can't leave it without a full report. Let the authorities sort it out. Damn shame to see potential trophies destroyed like that. Seems that they were upset because they weren't hooking big boys, but that is the nature of fishing or hunting. You don't destroy a fishery for selfish and insane reasons.

Mike, were you sharing a boat with the Kuwaiti and Indian? And what did they want just the bill and tail for? I am surprised the locals didn’t at least want the meat.

It is illegal to kill marlin or any gamefish.

The max a boat can keep is 2 fish or 10kg of fish.

So basically cannot kill any fish bigger than 10 kg.

The trip was a marlin fishing expedition organized by the Kuwaiti. The Kuwaiti and the guy from Bombay basically made a behind the scene deal to split the cost of the trip by inviting along 2 others - Yasir a kid from Banglore and me.

The boat is a new boat and wanted to fish for marlin to build its business/reputation.

The goal for these two guys was to take a trip picture of a marlin in their lap on the boat - a trophy picture.

I told them a marlin is considered caught when the leader is touched.

Sitting with a marlin outside the water on ones lap looks stupid as it can only be done with small fish. Trying sitting with 800-1000 pounds on ones lap. It’s only works with small fish.

The boat was not set up for bringing any big fish out of the water. Not a well designed boat.

Dragging the fish up and taking pictures basically seriously injures the fish and significantly increases risk of killing it.

I said doing so is the fishing equivalent of child pornography - cannot ever be justified. They said we paid for it and we will do it.

The crew on the boat are “Karen” people - a small minority of Burmese (East Asian looking) that are known to be very shy quite and polite/submissive. They would not stand up. The boat owner was not on the boat.

The marlin was caught, wire/leader touched, then basically physically worm down to get on boat, then dragged and tortured on the boat for pictures, then dumped in for make fake release video, then dragged back on the boat for more pictures, finally Tail and bill chopped off, a little meat taken and belly opened and dumped into the sea.

Have it all on video and pictures.

My worry is the Karen crew will be made fall guys and the boat owner screwed but the really criminals will walk free.

Very sad state of affairs. If someone pm me - I will send the whole electronic log of the tragic act.

The crew were injured trying to drag the marlin on board the boat.

The Cheap bastards - the Kuwaiti and Indian are worthless human trash.

They say they want to tip the crew 8000 rupees each - I say that is low but if that is what the group wants it is 8,000

I tip the guys 8,000 and enough gear to make up.

These guys then say 8,000 is too much but they will give me money.

I say fuck no - it is 8,000 from me . We had discussed that earlier it was individual.

Then the weasels don’t roll assuming the crew will think it is from all of us.

I went back and told the crew it was from me. The other guy Yasir is a 26 kid from banglore. He actually borrowed money from the boat operator to tip the crew.

Complete low lifes - break the law, impose liabilities on all, injure crew by their action and then just walk off the boat like dealing with money is beneath them.

When I observed the illegal acts I did a few things.

I sent WhatsApp with some limited pictures to couple of ar members and family and fishing people. I sent emails from multiple accounts to a couple of people including sone ar members and my dad. I sent Facebook messenger messages to others. I also started this thread. I was worried if Indian navy or coast guard stopped the boat the two guys would say all the dead marlin bill and tail were mine. It would be 2 versus me. I needed to create a electronic trail.

I was fishing hutbay - it was near impossible for me to get back to Port Blair without being on the boat.
