The 1st attempt to import trout to South Africa was in 1875 but proofed to be unsuccessful.

However, this did not deter some of the dedicated men with a love of these silver and brown slabs and the persisted.

Mr. John Parker a farmer in the Howick district of the then Natal colony. Kwazulu Natal (KZN) today and Mr. Lchlan McLean from Cape Town kept at it.

John Parker releases some of the 1st fish in the crystal clear rivers (water from the Drakensberg mountain range) in the Howick district in the 1880's.

Both in the Natal and Cape Colony's trout hatcheries were established in the 1890's to stock not only local rivers and streams but also export millions of eggs to the then Transvaal and Rhodesia where trout populations were established.

Those dedicated and passionate lovers of the gentle art of trout angling were responsible for many many happy days spent along Southern African streams and still waters hunting wild willy trout with a fly rod.

Love it! tu2 Dullstrom is one of my favorite places in all of South Africa with its numerous fly fishing shops and all! A quiet and pleasurable respite from all of the 'normal' hunting and fishing pursuits found in South Africa! Big Grin

The best trout fishing I ever experienced was near Wakkerstroom on the Mpumalanga escarpment going down into KZN. The place was a game ranch that included an old fishing operation. 16 dams and a small river connecting them all as it flowed down the escarpment. The brown, rainbow, and goldens acted like they were starving and had never seen a fly. I am not an accomplished fly fisherman but it was almost too easy. It made scoring a McNabb a snap!

There is no reason to have a beer in Dullstroom when you can have a real libation in Wild About Whiskey. This is undoubtedly the best collection of Scotches I have ever seen/ tasted, anywhere!

Thanks,

I fish with a DI3 sinking line, I rarely fish with a floating line.

We have reproducing naturally in some of the streams of the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal.

The rest of the country where they occur they needed to be stocked from hatcheries.
