Back to the Boundary Waters
I'm headed back up to the BWCA this week for a long weekend camping and fishing. Leaving for Ely on Wednesday, headed in on Thursday, home on Sunday. We'll be staying on Lake Three and will be taking day trips into Rock of Ages Lake and Path Lake (very long portages to get there). The area was charred by last years Pagami Creek Fire so it will be interesting to see the post-burn lanscape.

I am getting antsy already!

My first visit to Lake Three was in 1998 and this will be my 13th trip there. Here's some images from trips in the past...

The view at the lookout over Rock of Ages Lake.

I gotta get there someday before I'm too old for the padling and portaging.

Here's a few pics from the trip, I'll follow up with details later. Mike I cannot recommend doing a trip like this enough!

Take a good look at this and compare it to the last pic in my post above...

Fishing was about average. Plenty of small pike and a few eatin' size fish bit on Mepps spinners and Rapala minnows.

One night produced a spectacular sunset, reflected on the lake like glass.

Wow, gorgeous, Evan K. Thanks for sharing!

It's been way too long since my last outing at the BWCA; departing from the port of Ely!

Laying in a canoe in the middle of a still lake... watching the aurora borealis was something I'll never forget.

You are fortunate to live so close to the Boundary Waters!

Thanks Hawkeye... I love the feeling when you first arrive in Ely!

I am very fortunate to live here in the great state of Minnesota (despite living in the middle of the Twin Cities), and as well fortunate to have a father who started bringing my brother and I along on these trips starting at a young age. You could say I'm blessed to be physically capable of doing this stuff too.

There was no Borealis this time, but the sunsets made up for it:

One particularly memorable aspect of this trip was being witness to the aftermath of the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire. Just guess which shoreline below got burned up...

Some areas won't look like they used to for a long time.
