the comments after the article are interesting. the bunny-huggers are really out in force. the article itself was either written by someone with no fishing knowledge or a poor spellchecker. the bait used was most likely an amberjack (NOT AN AMBERGINE) and the reel was a Shimano TLD, NOT a PLD and they aren't built in Destin, although they may be modified there. that is still a helluva catch. the deckhand was absolutely stupid to put a gaff in a green mako that size- he is damn lucky that fish didn't skyrocket and land in the boat. makos love too jump and a green one at boatside often ends up in the boat with jaws and tail in high gear.

Go down to Destin or Panama City sometime and go fishing with some of these yahoos - thrill a minute and brings to mind the old saw about god looking out for those that cannot or will not help themselves.
A lot of this activity comes out of the HalfHitch Tackle shop - they have a website at http://www.halfhitch.com/fishdefault.asp?fishID=40
They postup profound statements such as - "Remarks: Sharks obviously must be handled with great care. The larger the more dangerous."

Cool

Lord, give me patience 'cuz if you give me strength I'll need bail money!!

I just returned from the Gulf and saw the pics. One hellofa Mako. The bait was an "Amberine" which is in the Jack family. A two pound Amberjack would be illegal as bait as they have a minimum 28 inch limit (nose to fork of tail). The Red Snapper bite was on and our crew all took limits that averaged 5 lbs. My best was a 10 lb male. LDK

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
