On a hike to Hawks Bill Crag on the Buffalo River in Arkansas yesterday I discovered this timber rattler lying about a foot off the trail. Other hikers had walked past him and he was a bit hot when my wife and I came along.

I shoved him with a long stick and he moved on after striking at the stick. It had 7 segments on its rattle.

This is me on Hawks Bill Crag.

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

Beautiful snake. Always watch where you are going!

I judge my success in life by the number of hunting and fishing stories my sons are able to tell.

I want to add an interesting sidebar. During Desert Storm I received a GM magazine with a picture of this Hawks Bill Crag. A fews days later we were located in an area with only sand; not a bush or blade of grass and as level as a pool table. Well I started walking around and I found the only rock for miles around. This rock is a little smaller than my fist and it looks exactly like Hawks Bill Crag. I still have both and if I could I would post a picture.

The snakes are now coming out of hibernation here in the Ozarks. Wonderful Fall colors in your pix.

we have killed 12 around the house/barn since the season began- 6 in the last week alone. looks like it's going to be another bad year. 30 is our average season total but it has been as high as 75.
