I have two 264 ruger 77 stainless rifles Anand two savage model 11 260 rem and a 260 in a ar10.I was thinking under 200 yards I don't need the 264 win mmmag and over 300 yards I do need the 264 win mag .I shoot the same bullet in both calibers and both shoot awesome with lapua 155 grain mega tip bullets both under an inch at 200 yards. The 264 rifles weigh 2. 5 pounds more than the 260 rem rifles my ar10 260 is almost 10 pounds. The 264 rifles kick pretty good the 260 does not kick to me.There is only 300 feet per second difference between them .If the 264 had a 28 inch barrel it would be about 600 fps difference . I am using the 264 rifles way less and think the 260 is the way too go for my deer and pronghorn rifle.I just quit hunting with my 338 win mag ruger 77 not sure how much more I will hunt with 338 for deer .

The 338 is a little rich for deer, at least here in Texas. I suppose the same could be said for the 264, but it is such a versatile caliber. The only thing negative that can be said about it was that when it was introduced Americans in general wee turned off by metric calibers. The 260 is a good round as well. My preacher's son has harvested a lot of deer with the 6.5 x 55 Swede. I hope you're not posting this looking for justification because that's unnecessary. It's good to have several rifles.

Never mistake motion for action.

I find it interesting that you think a 264 kicks, when you’ve also used a 338. Those are the two main calibers I hunt with, both Model 70’s stocked with Brown Precision fiberglass stocks. I regard the 264 as a moderate recoil caliber, certainly easy to shoot. My understanding is that those fiberglass stocks flex a bit and soak up some of the recoil, I don’t know for sure but I don’t regard either as having bad kick at all. I also have a Remington 700 in 300 RUM, and its kick is severe, so I just don’t shoot it anymore. In fact, I’m going to sell it as I’d rather stick with what works for me, the 264 & 338 win mags.

I hunted with my 338 win mag 33 years shot over 150 deer with it from 4 yards to 425 yards .It tore up less meat than any 3006 or 270.I just think unless I am using the 264 in open areas over 300 yards it's no better than the 260 up close I shot both the 338 and the 264 the other day the 264 with 155 grain and the 338 with 200 grain and to me the 264 kicked harder .The 264 has a narrow recoil pad and the 338 a wide one .I have not hunted that much with my 264 and the 260 shot a few head of game with them .When I use the exact same bullet in the 264 and 260 it's not much difference .

I need a bigger scope on the 264 win mag it only has a 3.5x10 x40 mm varix3 I can't make 300 yard shots on 10 power any more .I shot two pronghorn at 350 yards with that scope and rifle 20 years ago. I like the extra range of the 264 in clear cuts powerlines and wide open spaces but the 260 does the job in the woods .I hope to make a 28 inch barrel 264 one day to really stretch the range of the 264 . The 260 rem is getting carried more and more hunting these days .

For many years I used a M96 in 6.5 X 55 (an older round, equivalent to the 260 Rem) as my primary deer rifle. It worked fine out to about 300 yards. Killed my best mule deer (31.5" and BIG) with the 6.5. But when I stepped up to the 7mm RM the possibilities expanded a lot.

Just shot the second deer with the 260 rem .It was a 200 yard shot .It flipped it so fast I thought I missed it .I am using the 260 rem more and more for deer hunting .I hope to find the right long range bullet for this rifle .
