405 Belted DWR
Ohio let you use a straight wall, any length. Unlike Michigan’s 1.8” length.
So I built an Ohio rifle, will work fine in Missouri!
Started with a Sako 366 case, long and a fat .470 diameter. [neck is thin]
With the belt, the case is 2.590”…………so I tried some Quality Cartridge 400 Whelen brass.
Now the neck is .4385-.439”! I had to open the neck up .004”.
QC brass is about .010” shorter, no big deal.
Started with some Hornady Flat Points and Varget…….2340 fps.
Then some 300 TSX’s and Varget….2220 fps.
270 TSX and Benchmark………2570.
Tried some CFE Black, a bit too Fast!
Then 300 TSX and Benchmark………….2545 fps. [Holy Crap!]……… [.700 for 3 shots]
210 TSX and H4198, at 3000 fps and .800” for 3 shots.
Savage Axis HB test rifle, has also been a .500 Alaskan rebated rim.
Factory plastic stock, is ugly, but still doing fine.
Scope is a 4-14, mounted high………the rings I had.
I have been cutting down Barnes coppers for over 20 years.
The old 300s made a nice 240, that I used out of my “pistol”. .41-240x2.170”, 14.5” bbl. [no grooves]
Anyway I have a 23” Shilen barrel and homemade reamers made this project!
Sizes with Hornady 405 Win dies.
Oh, the throat is about .200 long, so I can seat the 300 TSX at 3.440”
Homemade belting dies and a final trim on the lathe, make the belt!
Now for some water testing! I shoot down into a bag lined 40 gal trash can. With a layer of cardboard over the top. No cardboad = bath!!!!! You cannot get out of the way of a tube of water rising!!!!!
Point blank is 300 yds with the 210s.
Fired QC brass holds 78 grains of H2O.
DWR!

Great stuff!
How thin is the neck brass of Sako 370 magnum/9,3x66 brass?
Have you thought about using 400/375 HH brass from Qual Cart? (belted 06 case)

I was wondering how a semi rimmed 405 would do in a bolt if the rim diameter was .495”

That is a thing of beauty
It needs to be mass produced.

I read you used 400 Whelen brass, after the belted ones? Was that a typo?

First I used the Sako brass, but the neck is thin. Didn't like the bullet tension. Then I bought some QC 400 Whelen brass. Much thicker neck! Had to open the chamber neck up .004 to get clearance for it to fit.

I also belted some 9.3x62, it also has a thin neck.
I also made some belting dies to use on 376 Steyr. I made that into a 44 straight wall.A belted 444 marlin.

Ok; I never heard of a 400 Whelen with a belt. That would not be necessary; wonder why they even make that brass?
But for what you are doing, it is a good thing.
Or you are swaging/turning a belt on them? I see now.

2 passes [2 dies] in the Rockchucker, then a belt seat on the arbor press. Then a touch up on the lathe.

Ohio has a straight wall rifle for deer, just wanted to make one. The Whelen wouldn't work.

More BS,
Would a standard 1895 .405 Wcf have been satisfactory in Ohio?

I love what you are doing, but why not a semi rimmed 444?
Squeeze the case head down but not the rim or reduce the rim of the 444?
Same thing for the 405...

A short action belted 06 thumper would be a sweet gun. A 2.275” case using 405 bullets using a 2.8” magazine length. Take any light 308 case based gun and you got a fun piggy popper!

I see now; you are just making wildcats and belts because it is fun to do; good job. I will answer the question of why not a 444; because it is not a .40. Reason enough.

My Sako "pistol" has a case length of 2.170", it will launch a 300 Hornady SP at 2150 out of a 14.5" barrel. I tested the Barnes 210 TSX and can get 2630 fps.

I found that when I make the brass out of W/W 7x57 brass, I do not have to inside neck ream. 13 shots on one pc of brass, full load 300s. Smiler

300@ 2150? That is 45-70 performance!
a perfect piggy popper in a small and light gun. I was thinking that with .522” bullet protrusion in nominal 405 bullets a 2.275” case would be ideal. That could be a fun AR10 gun.

Originally the reamer was made for a Hawk 300 bullet.
The .035 jackets work well with the 2.170".

Trimming the case to 2.240" a Hornady SP would be very close to fitting 2.800".

This is a test that was done on belt life!

First test made 8 shots before a failure.

That is when I added the third die to seat the rim.

!0 shots on this target and I fired a total of 13 with no failures on the Mauser brass.

With the three die process of belting, I have not had a belt failure on any brand of brass.

Qualtiy Cartridge sells a 400-375 Nitro Express that is 2.5" long.

Hope you are still having fun with these kittens... Question is... what is the case capacity of the belted Sako case vs 400/375 QC at the same length?
If we want to get wild... Belt and extractor groove the 9,3x74R brass for maximum case capacity and rounds down in a long action. That would be a long, elegant cigarillo to smoke! You could do the 405 Belted 3” with nominal 405 bullets or a 2.8” with nominal 400 rifle bullets. If you just extractor groove the 74 case you could do a long neck 400 whelen to 2.8 or 3” for more boom boom room. Oh! The possibilities!!!!

No idea about case capacity of a 400-375 case.

The 9.3x74R is .465 at the base and does not have enough 'meat' to belt. At least on a new Norma case.

Just ran a 300 Win Mag thru the BOSS dies, then the 405 Dies!

I now have a 405 case that is 2.725"s long![after blown out]

I will have to cut a cross section out of the base to see what the inside looks like.

Very happy with the federal 300 Mag case.

Nice radius and taper, the Winchester shows why they have more case capacity.

Five step press reduction works better tan I thought it would.

I have learned why they make heavier forming presses. If i keep this up, I will have to invest in a bigger press.
