i was thinking of picking up a 510wells, but i don't know much about this round, can ammo be easly obtained? i do reload, whats the vel. and energy on this round? thanks

the 500 a-square is easier to buy ammo for but i like the wells. this is a pretty serious round. just do a search for 500 a square or 510 wells

to be fair, there's no appreaciable difference ni the a2 vs the wells.. except you can buy ammo at midway for the a2, and for both you can get from superior ammo and quality cart.

if you work at "sane" pressures, these cases will match the 500 jeffe/505 gibbs... 535 at 2400 ...

some folks run them lots harder.. but that then requires a heavy gun and high pressure loads

Buy 378, 416 or 460 brass, fireform in the 510 chamber, back off 500A2 data 5-10% and work up:

Depending on your barrel and how you load, you ought to be able to get a 600 gr pill doing 2400 fps, maybe 2500. That puts it at just about twice as powerful as a 375 H&H, which would be about 8000 ft/lb.

I've shot 600's @ 2200 from my 500 Jeffrey, and until I put a really good stock on it, I won't be loading it any hotter!

thank you for all your input, I'm still debating on the rifle, and the ease of reloading such a round will be the deciding factor.
so if i got this correct, i'd use 460wby cases, and neck up the throat to .510, as for the round would i use the same as the 500 jeffery. or the 500NE both are listed as .510?

Bigbore, it's a very easy round to load.
To form your brass, just put a small charge of powder in the bottom of a 460Wby case, top off with cornmeal or other filler, plug the neck with parafin or styrofoam, then fire it in the 510Wells chamber. You probably won't even have to trim the neck. Then load with .510 caliber bullets.
For plinking I use cast lead gas checks at about 1650fps and also surplus 50 cal machine gun bullets at about 2150fps (must be loaded one at a time). Or you can launch 600 grainers at 2350.
My particular rifle is very accurate and actually fairly pleasant to shoot.
