Yes. And yes.

AtkinsonAs much as I like the 10.75x68 its a border line DG gun, but on the right side of the border line IMO...
But in truth from a logical and practical point of view the 416 Rem, 416 Ruger, are much better options if you can live without nostalgia.
For nostalics not to fear, the old 404 and 10.75 x 68 were doing the job of killing DG with aplomb for a century or two ago, and still do just that. Early on the 10.75 got a bad rap with sorry 300, 350 gr. bullets..Today just try a 400 gr. woodligh soft and solid at 2200 to 2250 FPS and feel well armed indeed..

Hey buddy, Let me remind you that the 404 and the full length RUM carts have just about the same case capacity --
both of which are ~15% LESS than the rigby/weatherby rum/jeffery = these cases are pretty darn close to same capacity
rigby/"big" weatherby - same
375/416 ruger is roughly the same as an improved full length HH case

I just ordered 150 cases of 416 Ruger.
A person has to ask themselves how much capacity they are going to use? The Ruger handles 5000 foot pound loads easily.
Done.

jeffeossoThe 416 ruger completely obviated the 416 AccRel -- roughly the same capacity and it's factory -- I love them both

Jeff--you know my thoughts on the 500 Acc Rel
When it comes to .416" we are in agreement, too.
A practical 416 caliber can now be covered by the 416 Ruger in an '-06-length action in rifles bought over the counter.
Only two main reasons remain for someone to build a 404:
a. The joy and nostalgia of building a traditional African caliber
b. The desire to use the extra 10 grains of powder capacity in the 404 over the 416 Ruger in handloads that are more powerful than the traditional anemic loads.
If this last reason is the motivation then a 416 "RUM" would make more sense,
and the 416 Rigby would make even more sense and would be available over the counter in relatively inexpensive rifles like the CZ Safari Magnum.
For those who want a practical "40-caliber" big game rifle, then, the easiest solution is to get
(1) either a Ruger African in 416 Ruger (wood+blued-steel) or
(2) a Ruger Guide Gun in 416 Ruger (laminate+stainless 20" barrel).
There other models available, like the previously offered Ruger Alaskan.
I am now old enough to appreciate the simplicity of this solution, so I just ordered 150 cases of 416 Ruger while I ponder the best model and rifle offering.

Alec TorresReplace the .404? You may be fixing something that is not broken.

boom stickLet’s just make one right now
Cut the 375 HH case to 2.66”. That will give a 3.34” OAL for an 06 size action length with 404 bullets being a .68” tip to canalure length. This should give up to 400@ 2300 fps. let’s just call it the 404 El Jeffe! (The Boss in spanish, Bruce Springsteen in Jersey who’s initials are B.S. like me but El Jeffe is the nickname for one of the best wildcatters there ever was and all around cool guy)
This is the same idea as the 375-404 but short enough to fit the smaller action with 95% of the performance.

It's already been done, maybe bettered.
It's called the 375 Ruger.

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:
"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

z1rI was hot for a .404 for a long time, then I was asked to build .375 Ruger for a customer. I liked the end result so much I ordered a .416 Ruger reamer and never looked back.
I just went with the path of least resistance. I get that sometimes though, you just want something just because. Ask me about the 10,75x68 sometime, lol. Definitely no the path of least resistance!

AtkinsonJeffe,
That's correct, but its called proud flesh in the horse bizness!!
All said and done, give me a 404 Jefferys or a 450-400-3" and Im a happy camper and not likely to get stomped or chewed on...and the 416 Rem aint bad at all..
