if you wanted a 45-70 ish rifle in an ar-15 rifle you could neck the 50 beowulf down to the 458 and have a semi auto 45-70ish rifle

it will do modern 45-70 velocities in a semi auto...

can you immagine throwing 525 gr piledrivers @1800fps with a pull of a trigger up to at least 7 times or more!!!

The 50 Beowulf is the 50 AE case before it's trimmed to length, the 458 SOCOM is the 50 Beowulf necked down. Actually, the Beowulf is the 458 SOCOM necked up, the SOCOM preceded the Beowulf. They used the 458 instead of the 451 (452?) so they could use the heavier rifle bullets. Tromix also built the 475 Tremor based on this same case. When Marty Ter Weeme dreamed this up I went in on the original run of brass with him which came from Starline, I used a bolt rifle and re-barreled it to this cartridge in a 44 caliber which I call the 44 Fat Boy, basically a long 440 CorBon.

Don't they use different rim diameters as well?

As far as I know they all use the .473 (.308/30-06) rim diameter which makes it a pretty substantial rebated rim. The brass I have is the .473 diameter.

The true history:
Bill Alexander used to work with Paul Leitner-Wise and they had dreamt up a round that looked like the 50 Beowulf. Only they could never decide on the final dimensions. They told me they were working with Starline and I talked to Bobby and gave him what I wanted: .50AE, untrimmed, with .308 rim size. I got my 2,000 pieces before Leitner Wise could decide on their dimensions. Paul and Bill had a falling out, Bill founded Alexander Arms and introduced the .50 Beowulf. It is the same parent brass, only his rim is the 7.62x39 rim size. We shorten ours to 1.575, he leaves his at 1.65 or so. We neck ours down to use the .458 bullets that back then we far more prevalent than the .500s....

Leitner Wise came out with the .499 LW which is different in diameter but does use the same rim as the .50 B.

So as to the original question, necking the .50B to .458 gives nothing more than a .458 SOCOM with a wee bit longer case. That only helps with the lighter loads, the heavier loads will not be affected noticable due to the fact that the bullets protrude into the case so deeply.

Kend indeed got half of the original 2,000 pieces back in 2000 as I thought I was just going to chamber a gun for my own use and could see the need for that much brass. Quien sabe?

Hey Marty, good to see you're still around! Thanks for the history, now I know the whole story and where the questions about the 7.62 X 39 rim diameter came from. I rented a reamer to a guy that built an AR chambered for the 44 Fat Boy, says it hits like a truck on hogs, I haven't had a chance to try it out yet but there are a couple of goats around here that.....
