Just bought a custom Mauser in 8mm-06 AI and the only data that I can find is some of Ackley's original loads.
I know I can work up app. 5% above standard 8mm-06 loads but I would like to hear some real time data and first hand experiences.

Thanx !

I would urge caution. I have a couple of Ackley Improved rifles and the published Ackley data, other than the lower to lower medium loads were to hot. Hope this helps.

The 8mm06 is .127" longer from the shoulder to the case head than the 8mm57; meaning? You can use the maximum load for the 8mm57 as your starting load. That is something Easton-Ackley mentioned when comparing loads for full length sized cases and neck sized cases.

I have used the starting load for the 30/06.

I have that data, I shoot mine with modern powders like CFE-223 and it sizzles, Its right up there with the 300s...email me and I will give you my data, drop 5% and work up from there.

I found that you could increase the 8x57 by 5% to the 8mm/06 and another 5% for the 8mm/06 Ackeley, that's 10% over the 8x57...all using handloads not factory or reloading book data that is simply BS underloaded due to law suits and old actions..The 8x57 is the full equal to the 30-06 with a good handload. I have one of those also, love the caliber.

I have a 8mm-06 AI with 24" bbl. I will share 2 loads: (1) 57g H414 with 200g Speer bullet gave 2740 fps (2) 58g IMR4350 with 200g Speer bullet gave 2650 fps. This gun has more power than a 30-06!!! I have only shot a couple deer with this gun and it hits them hard !!!

Thanks Oak,
My rifle has a 22" barrel. I would get 2700 and 2600 fps with those loads I'm guessing. I'm going to look at some .30-06 AI data also. Loads for that should also be safe pushing an equal weight bullet down a larger tube.

basic advice is to start with the parent case loads and work up -- in this case, start with 30-06 data

cool on having the data,

here's the rule of thumb, you get 25% increase in vel of the % increase in volume, for the SAME pressure --

of you get a 10% increase in the AI volume, then at the same pressure, you should see a 2.5% increase in vel --

having done a "couple" wildcats, this is as good of a rule of thumb as many

anything past this is increased pressure --

Ackley proved that AI carts handle pressure better

Unfortunatly one must accept more pressure to make a wildcat perform as believed 99% of the time..
My 8mm/06 Ackley made its case (so to speak) with 60 to 65,000 PSI..and Im good with that in the proper gun..
The 8mm/06 which I think is the most practicle operates at 55 to 60,000 PSI in my gun, before I punched it out to the Ackley,
I still have doubts the Ackley is any better form a practical standpoint of hunting.

Its a lot less trouble to neck up an 06 case to .324 than to fireform a couple of hundred rounds to the IMP version..but I done done it!! Roll Eyes hilbily

Rule of thumb is start with the 8x57 and work up a nice near max load, then modify to an 8mm-06 and add 5% powder charge and work up, then to the 8mm/06 Ackley and add another 5%..according to the experts..One would think you could just add 10& to the 8x57 based on that, but I have never tried it..

On deer and elk with 180 and 200 gr. bullets, it performs on them exactly the same as my old 338/06 and 338/06 IMP..The bad or good news is, depending on your state of mind is all these perform on game the same as a 30-06, dammit!!
