What is the name of the cartridge that puts a .404 Jeffrey bullet in a .338 Win Mag case. And if yuu know, how does that round compare (compete) with the .404 Jeffrey round?

eagle27Yes I am presuming it is the 425 Express based on a shortened 300 Win Mag case that you are talking about. Of course the Express can also be made on a 338 Win Mag case too. The ballistics for the 425 Express is 2,400fps with a 400gr .423" bullet which is exactly what you can get from the 404 Jeffery from the same bullet in a modern loading. The 404J can also be had in a standard length action as the 425 Express is and 404 factory ammo easier to obtain than Express ammo.

boom stickThen there is the 404-375 wildcat that is a necked up 375 HH without a shoulder or “improvement” for a 3.6” length action. Looks like a slimmer 458 lott.

It seems to me that the 404-375 is about the slickest and easiest 404 wildcat out there. I bet it feeds like greasy sausage out of a properly tuned model 70 classic. The 404-375 and 416 Taylor are about the best “no sweat” 40 something wildcats, with 404 Jeff and 416 Rigby equivalent power, out there.

Atkinson404/338 would be a 404 Chatfield Taylor to me, I shot the 416 CT for a time, and loved it..
Some big outfit necked up the 375 or 8mm magnum case and that was an over ambitious venture the failed mislerably with more than a few other companys..
the 404 Jefferys is just too good to play with..

Gert OdendaalI am buying reamer/go and no go gauges , re-loading dies and 240 brass for the .338 Imperial Magnum..I think it is maybe what you really was wondering about , this caliber ..404 case shooting a .338 bullet

This sounds about right becasue any Win Mag case size action should work. Perfect rifle for all of North American Big game.

AtkinsonA plus for the 404 like like the 416 Rigby is that big expansion chamber and low pressure and high velocity combination, if one takes advantage of it, most never consider it and go with nostalgia or lack of knowledge there of....
