BOS and BOSS belted brass

I have been working on a belted .470 brass for a 444 Marlin.
I have been using 376 Steyr brass.
Jeffeosso suggested using Mag brass, turn the belt off and rebelt.
This works great!
Boom stick suggested 6.5 RPM brass that would require no head rebating!
He [boom stick] also suggested a name:
“I think it would be appropriate to name the case or line of cartridges I was thinking about it a little and I thought of BOS for belted ought six. I was thinking that the cartridge I described above would be appropriately named the 400 BOSS for belted ought six straight. Any thoughts?”
“Of course the BOSS name can be applied to the larger diameter bullets like the 416, 423, 444 etc so you could have the whole BOSS line of cartridges for 400 on up.
The 6.5 RPM case from Weatherby could be used to form these cases as well but probably expensive.
There is a case manufacturer who could do this by the hundreds or thousands.”
Yep, the name sounds GREAT!
BOS Belted Ought Six
And
BOSS Belted Ought Six Straightwall
So, what do you all think?

The 444 BOSS holds 80.3 grains of H2O.
The 400 BOSS holds 79.3 grains to the top.

Has my seal of approval patriot
Will the belt diameter be .495”? .500”?
It is a beautiful thing when we come together to create something.
PS
The 400 BOSS will clean up an 06 chamber!
Will 405 dies work? Altered 405 dies?
Long live the BOSS!

Belt will be at-least .490".

405 dies have a base of .453", so they won't work.
I don't know if you could anneal them and re cut?

To have a true straight wall 400 Whelen dies won't work either, if you need a full length resize.

Yes, for a BOSS you can’t use Whelen dies.
You could do a Belted Whelen Improved for max capacity.
I don’t like belts and shoulders though.
I guess custom dies are in order.
Group dies order with
400 BOSS
416 BOSS
404 BOSS
425 BOSS
444 BOSS?

Loving it!!

on the dies, they are harder than my ex's heart, so the short (see what i did there) answer is to grind them shorter, and have an "air gap" to the shell holder, where they just touch belt .. make em shorter to be proper length, full stroke, with a big gap between bottom of the die and shell holder -- that way you don't ruin some carbide inserts, and it's WAY less hassle ...

i might would mount a 4.5" grinder with a death wheel (cutoff wheel) on a tool holder in the lathe

I have carbide tooling, I can shorten them.

I have read about some people re-cutting them, maybe they were just opening up the necks!

What would the short action version be called?

I need some 375 H&H brass to belt!

Hate to waste 340 Weatherby brass.

Had an old case that was opened up to .411.

Ran it thru the BOSS dies.....2.900".......90 GRAINS OF H2O!! 5 Grains less than a 375 H&H!

Might want to use the STEYR head. ?

Belted Ought Six Straight!

I need a longer test barrel!!!!!

Soooo a BOSS Magnum?
Going for 2.85”?
DG purists would want a case without a rebated rim but that would not be a Belted 06 anymore in theory. If it is stamped BOSS Mag then there would be a clear delineation between the BOSS and the longer unrebated version.
a 2.8ish inch 400 BOSS Mag would be a slenderized 458 Lott (in a good way) Would it get more rounds down without too much monkeying around is the question. If a 9,3x74R could be belted, then you would for sure get more rounds down but that would be the longer 405 belted and not a BOSS Mag.

Now we are getting into some serious Boom Boom Room BOOM
That 405 Belted Magnum in a long action would be easy to convert from an 06 based rifle with a bunch of rounds down or still work in an 06 length action and nominal 405 bullets but a significant useable case capacity over a 405 Win.
The Boss Mag might be harder to coax in a conversion but it has its own merits like more taper to .411”

I would be giddy to have either of those or a 2.8” long neck 400 Whelen Super Ought Six made from a 9,3x74.

Is it also possible to swage a belt on a rimless cartridge? What is easier? your process or this one?

PS, have you seen my 400 Karamojo idea? 375 HH necked up to .411? or the 400-300HH? (pretty much what is a super rare 400 Griffin and Howe) The 400-300HH has a long neck and the 400-375HH has a shorter neck and a ghost shoulder but an easy 375HH conversion.

yes it's possible to swage a belt on - weatherby did it

it's a huge hassle, and should be done when making it, not after the fact

but the point here is case capacity -

Found out something new today, I loaded the un-rebated head into a 30/06 mag. Of course it hung up on the head.

"Idea" Leave the belt bigger, let it hold the magazine open for the head diameter.

It sure is ugly, but as long as the OAL is near max, the belts and heads stay stacked. They cannot get out of stagger. Cause they all are stacked.

And, they seem to feed out of the magazine OK!!!!

Well, what do you think?

I like the 376 Steyr size, .500-.495 Belt with a .495 rim.

My belting stuff.
You could do it with die blanks at $20 each or 7/8 drill rod at $30 for 3 feet.

Then you need to make a bushing holder.

I have the .429 barrel already profiled for my Stevens 200. It only has a 2.8" mag so this will be the shortest one.

Just waiting on my brother to finish his power spinner.

10" sine plate with a home made 5C collet holder with a motor. Sent it out and had the tube hardened, now just waiting on the indexer.

The surface grinder doesn't have enough travel to do my long reamers, but should be great for shorter ones.

My .500 Alaskan head spaces off the mouth. I just rebated the head to .532 on Alaskan brass. Also used 50-110 Jamison, cause no RUM brass could be bought at the time.

I will look, but I should have some belted Alaskan brass.

My Alaskan brass is only.544 at the base, probably why I didn't belt the Starline Brass.

You cannot have much taper in the 500 Kill All, .532 to .529 is only .0015 per side taper.

Finding the fattest brass is the first step. With your tools, a better case can be made from a larger case. Very little taper. A short version would be better for taper. You can taper the chamber if you need to and have a zero taper case!

As noted the 50/110 has very little taper however for use in bolt actions a better design would be a belted 50/90 Sharps case. For this you could start with a 338 Lapua case and form the belt, aiming to end up with a body diameter at the base of 0.565”. This will provide a body taper of approx 30 thou, which is about the same as the 458 Win Mag.

The Lapua case rim could be left untouched, so overall you would end up with a case that was relatively easy to form.

This allows the use of inexpensive cowboy 50/90 dies and a large range of 0.510” bullets.

The use of 416 Rigby brass would probably allow for making a 3” version, which would be a better length for BRNO 602 and CZ550 conversions.

Like JFE stated, using [belting] a Rigby or Lapua case would make a nice .510 BLASTER.

Or I guess that you could just blow out and taper the big Weatherby case down. "OUCH"
