rem 700 bolt disassembly

Just curious, how often do yall disassembly the bolt for cleaning?

I just purchased a new Rem 700 and feel like when the bolt is worked there could be excess (or no) grease/lubricant inside of it.

Buglemintoday, There should be NO grease inside the bolt. Grease goes on the outside; bolt lugs and cocking hole (triangular, you'll see it close to the bolt handle).

When all else fails take it to a gunsmith (understand there some really good ones in Texas).

All you have to do is hook the edge of the cocking piece over a sharp bench edge and push the bolt forward until you can slip a penny between the CP and the bolt shroud. Release and unscrew the assembly for cleaning and lube. I use Auto tranny fluid. Stays wet and won't harden in cold temps.

Good call on using the ATF as bolt lube.

For years I've been using military arctic weapons lubricant, which seems to be composed of 4parts Type F automatic transmission fluid to 1 part marvel mystery oil.

Years ago I picked up a quart can of "Lubricant, Arctic, weapons" Oil at a surplus dealer.

I only use Eezox on my firearms anymore. Not only lubes the working parts but removes rust and is a rust inhibitor. I have a closet full of cleaners, lube's, oils and grease, including two 16 oz cans of Rust Inhibitor that had no propellant in them. They now gather dust.

In answer -- rarely. If the nickel slips out, BTW, using the first overlap of boot laces to pull against and re-cock the bolt works fine. (Old Marine trick, apparently.) Yep, have used it myself.

I agree. I use 0w30 motor oil on the pin/spring assembly. Engine oils are made to stay thin when cold. Other things, like grease, will cause problems in cold weather.

Hornady one shot also seems to stay slick in cold weather.
