| Acids are the thing that remove bluing. There are no reasons to use solvents on the bluing. |

| The abrasive quality of the patch is what removes bluing in the bore; if that is what you mean. Solvent has no effect unless it contains an acid or abrasives. |

| The term blueing is a little misleading. As I understand it, and I've done rust blueing a few times, blueing actually creates a microscopic layer of oxidation on the metal. The color is incidental. This layer's purpose is to contain oil, thereby preventing rust. The last step in the rust blueing process is a bath in light oil that contains varnish. The gunsmiths on AR can certainly provide a more complete explanation. |
