Today I checked my new 7x30 120 grain Nosler BT load. With 748 powder a 3 shot average was 2492 FPS. Is this about what everyone gets?

I also checked the Federal factory load and it was 2386 FPS

I used an old Oehler 35 to check these speeds.

14" barrel ? It seems pretty fast ....but it is what it is. I get 2500 in a 23" barrel and 130 gr. Speer SBT. But I don't push them much.

That federal factory load mirrors what I got from my last 14" 7x30 TC. Sounds about right.

The last 14" 7-30 Waters I had chronographed 2436 FPS with 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips loaded with H-4895. I took a couple of Whitetails with that Barrel & Load and like an idiot sold it.

With 120 grain BT's in my 20" Contender barrel I get 2600 fps using BLC(2). I believe I could get more, but the bullets really hold up on deer-sized game and I always get shoot throughs on lung or shoulder shots (about 140# deer).

My barrel is a bull taper Bullberry. I get really great groups, always under 1 m.o.a. btw.

Allowing for the shorter barrel, your figures seem well in line with my (and others) experience.

JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Thanks for all the replys. I have been shooting the 7X30 since April I thank and the more that I shoot it the more I like it. For me it's perfect for the Contender.

I have had Contenders since the late 1970s but never a 7X30 until this year. Look what I have missed for all of these years.
