I dearly love the Contender pistol, but the most accurate single shot pistol I have is a B/F falling block in 219 Donaldson Wasp. It stays under 1/2" at 110 yards with more than one bullet/powder combination. The load I'm using now is the 50 gr. Rem. HP or Nosler BT over 29gr. of AA2495 at 2.265" O.A.L. (with the Rem.bullet).
I'd also like to hear what your favorite scope is for hunting pistols. I've tried about all of them, but my favorite (believe it or not) is the now discontinued 7X simmons, closely followed by the 10X Burris.

Well since my only single shot pistols are Contenders, I would have to say that "...it's my Contenders."

My most accurate barrel is my Hornet barrel. Factory 14" unmodified bbl. I can make 5 shots touch each other @ 100 yards most of the time. This is not the case with my other Contender barrels, but most will still do around an inch or slightly better.

The scope on my Hornet is a 2.5-8x Weaver. I have a couple of Bushnells, 2 trophy and 1 elite, and a TC. Might be forgetting one in there. I don't have any target scopes, but all are field scopes.

My Remington XP-100 in 7mm-08. With either speer 130 gr or Hornady 139 gr, it is a one hole gun at 100 yards easily a 1/2 minute gun. Another one that is not going to leave my safe.

I had a wichita mk 40 in 6.5 BR with a krieger barrel. With a 6x scope, it would shoot .4s all day, and .3s once in awhile.

I foolishly sold it - got it back, then foolishly sold it again.

My most accurate single shot pistol is one of my Remington XP-100's. It still wears the original Remington barrel, but has been put into an H-S Precision stock and wears a Dewey custom trigger.

Twice on the same afternoon it shot 0.35 inch five shot groups at 100 yards using 130 grain Sierra Matchking bullets and N 135 powder.

This with a 2.5-8 Leupold scope set on 8 power and off sand bags.

I guess if you count screamer groups (one-offs seldom repeated: you know, the one the guy carries in his wallet to impress anyone who will listen) any reasonable SS pistol can be extremely accurate. Personally I judge by aggregates - four consecutive 5-shot groups averaged together. Strange how that super accurate gun suddenly fails to deliver the tiny groups you think it does....

Anyway, the answer is my XP-100 in .250 Savage. With the original full bull Hart barrel glued into a MacMillan stock with 14X scope it would agg in the .3s. Won a lot of BR competitions with it, it would even agg in the .5s with cast bullets. I stopped competition with it and had the barrel turned down to a comfortable sporter weight, then put it in a wood stock under a hunting scope. It's a great deer/varmint rig now.

Nimrod: I like your accuracy criteria -- and I love your pistol. The .250 is such a wonderful marriage to the XP-100 platform, and what a doozey to hunt with.

Soooo....we're defining a "pistol" as ANY firearm regardless of weight, bbl length, or ANY OTHER criteria as simply being a firearm without a buttstock...???
hmmm....not in my world, but..... whatever.
I'm perfectly OK with "benching" a (true) handgun to work up loads, determine ultimate precision, etc...but in MY little corner handguns are firearms which are routinely used OFF the bench, fired offhand, or at most from field expedient positions. Much of what I see these days are simply rifles without buttstocks.
OK...to each their own. ENJOY.

Don: Nothing wrong with a handgun meant to be "shot off your hind legs," such as a single or double action revolver.
A lot of us hunt with revolvers out to 75-80 yards and the single shots on out to three times that range or more. Both critters have their place, and both can be equally rewarding in their own, very different ways.

My long time friend 7MM TCU Super 14 that I have used in competitions since the 70's.
While it could never shoot out too 1,000 yards with MOA accuracy,it still is a BB stacker at 500 with 160 grain bullets.

This is a good thread for me. I am just beginning with a 7 TCU so I can compete effectively in the rifle and pistol club I am a member of. I am half way through necking up my first 100 rounds of brass, carving a benchrest type forend and grip. Looking forward to next year. We are finished with the shoots requiring a long range, (100+ yard), pistol for this year.

xphunter, you have the best looking single shot pistol that I have ever seen, kudos.
Personally I would look for a Wichita pistol that is produced from the ground up to be a tack driver, from a bench rest small custom shop. Before I get a factory produced variant that has price point as their main purpose. Granted there are exceptions.
